We got 6+ inches of snow overnight, and the skies cleared by morning. I met friends at the carpool lot on Century Drive at 5:30am and headed up to Mt. Bachelor together. There were a handful of people, all of whom seemed to know each other, and about 5 dogs, including my dog Riggins. The horizon was already turning light blue as we hiked up toward the cone. We skied our first lap by headlamp in fluffy, untracked powder.
I turned my headlamp off and put it in my pack, then put my skins back on and skied back up for another lap. It was at the top of the Cone before my second lap that I took this picture. It looked like a painting to me. I said to my friends, “It feels like Friday!” We took our second lap and then one more before piling back into cars and heading down to town, where we parted ways and went to work.
Mornings like this make me feel alive. The beauty of sunrise hitting the mountains brings joy to my heart in a way that nothing else can.
