SUMMARY:Crossings
DESCRIPTION:What does it truly feel like for wildlife to navigate our fragmented world? National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Morgan Heim invites you past the dry data and into the visual heartbeat of migration. \nThis special presentation features two starkly beautiful projects: Deer 139\, a feature film following the raw\, grueling 100-mile journey of a pregnant mule deer across the rugged Mountain West\, and Roads Most Taken\, a localized fine art portrait series honoring roadkill with flowers to ponder the hidden costs of our daily transit. Step into their hooves\, paws\, and footprints\, and discover how true empathy can pave the way for real-world conservation and safer crossings. \nPlus\, catch the world premiere of our new short film\, Crossings\, by filmmaker Veronica Wood. Crossings will drop viewers into the ponderosa pine forests at the base of Black Butte\, revealing the challenges wildlife face in this abundantly beautiful area. \nA Q&A with both Morgan Heim and Veronica Wood will take place following the film.

SUMMARY:Best Case Scenario
DESCRIPTION:Tired of environmental doom and gloom? So is Emma Marris. In this talk\, based on her National Geographic cover story looking ahead to life in 2070\, Marris will paint a portrait of one possible future: the one where we learn how to live well on Earth. \nIts not easy to be optimistic about the environment these days\, but a vision of the good futures that are still available to us is essential to keep our momentum up as we work for change. This talk won’t be a Pollyanna-ish exercise in wishful thinking. Change—and loss—has already begun and more is inevitable. But all is not lost\, and there are diverse\, green possibilities still. \nUsing the latest science and social science as a starting point\, this vision of what we are fighting for is realistic\, achievable\, and inspiring.

SUMMARY:November Exhibit at Tumalo Art Co.—Taylor Manoles
DESCRIPTION:Richly textured oil landscapes by Taylor Manoles will fill the Tumalo Art Co. exhibit area during November. The opening reception for “And There Was Evening\, and There Was Morning” is November 6\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk. Five large paintings\, and a few smaller ones\, describe this thoughtful theme taking us into late fall and winter. \nThe title for Taylor’s exhibit marks the beginning of a rhythm — the first ordering of light and darkness\, ending and beginning\, rest and renewal.\nThe world unfolds through this rhythm\, and we continue to live within it: receiving each day as part of a story that began long before us and continues beyond us. \n“In the shifting light\, I find an invitation to wonder and to trust amongst the dissonance of life: to remember that we are part of a story set in motion in the beginning\, a story that is still unfolding\, still creating\, still calling us forward\,” says Taylor of her Novemberr exhibit. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open seven days a week. For more information on the gallery\, visit tumaloartco.com.

SUMMARY:How to Train Your Dragon Soars Into Bend
DESCRIPTION:Local young performers are preparing to take audiences to the Viking village of Berk in Ovation Performing Arts’ (OPA) production of “How to Train Your Dragon the Musical\, Jr.” Fresh off its April release\, the DreamWorks box office smash success is coming to the stage as OPA’s Forte cast transform into Vikings and dragons\, Nov. 6-14 at Caldera High School. Tickets are $15. \nThe story follows awkward\, young Viking Hiccup who defies village traditions\, befriends Toothless\, a rare ferocious dragon\, and forges a friendship with his foe as the two learn to trust each other to unite their warring worlds. While the plot may be familiar\, a few twists will surprise\, such as talking and singing dragons. The songs are all original for this adaptation\, with music by Veronica Mansour and lyrics by Mansour and Kate Thomas\, who also wrote the book. Some likely favorites include the epic opening ensemble number “In Berk / We’re Not Leaving\,” Hiccup’s anthem “What a Viking Can Do\,” heroine Astrid’s showcase solo\, “Just Another Girl” and “Kill on Sight\,” which brings The Book of Dragons to life. \n“I am so pleased to have the opportunity to direct over 60 extremely talented students in the new junior musical from MTI (Music Theatre International)\,” said Director Jana Mohr. “This story has meant so much to me since I first saw it on the big screen 15 years ago. Having that many kids and a script with dozens of featured ensemble roles was an unexpected gift.” \nMohr\, who is new to OPA\, is the founder of CoCreated\, an all-ages drama club. She’s been directing plays for several years as well as volunteering\, ensuring community access to theater. After years of continuous growth\, OPA Creative Director and show Musical Director\, Jonathan Shepherd\, sought her out to bring new life\, skill and passion to OPA’s youth. Her ideas and vision captured not just the children\, but the parent and friend volunteers working tirelessly to bring elaborate scenery\, edgy costumes and realistic props to life. \n“This show would not be possible without the dedicated team of volunteers and production staff at Ovation Performing Arts\,” Mohr said. “There will be six opportunities to catch a performance – I hope to see you there!” \nIn addition to the show\, a raffle basket\, photo booth and candy grams to send to cast members will be available in the lobby.
