SUMMARY:Comedy For Kids' Sake
DESCRIPTION:We’re rolling out the red carpet\, and you are invited! Join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon for a fabulous night of comedy\, libations\, and defending potential. Our 22nd annual Comedy For Kids’ Sake is returning to the Tower Theatre November 15th\, 2019\, and promises to be the best yet\, hosted by the effervescent Tracee Tuesday\, voted best local radio personality in 2018\, and featuring two side-splitting comedians. \nThe evening includes a huge silent auction and an exciting live auction that gets the crowd competing over one-of-a-kind items. Favorites are the “showstopper:” thousands of dollars in beer\, wine\, and spirits\, two tickets to anywhere Alaska Air flies\, and the “food truck frenzy:” with culinary experiences all around Central Oregon. Getaways\, like a large vacation rental on the Oregon Coast or a stay in a private cabin located on a secluded ¾-mile stretch of the best fly fishing water on the Lower Deschutes will also create a stir. \nAll proceeds from Bend’s premier red carpet event\, goes towards matching Central Oregon youth with caring adult mentors\, also known as\, DEFENDERS OF POTENTIAL. Children benefit from a caring adult inspiring their potential. Studies show youth with mentors do better in school and reach higher levels of education than those without\, and there are hundreds of kids from Madras to La Pine who need mentors. Join us for a spectacular event\, become a Defender of Potential\, and change a life for the better\, forever.

SUMMARY:Oregon Humanities Conversation Project: It’s a Free Country: Exploring the Limitations and Responsibilities of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Ever heard the expression “America: land of the brave and free” or “It’s a free country! I can do what I want?” Maybe you think or say these things yourself. But what does it mean to “be free?” Join Ann Su for a conversation that explores the impact of culture on how we define\, value and experience freedom personally and in community. Participants will discuss different questions: Does everyone have access to freedom in the same way? What choices come with freedom and what are the responsibilities that accompany those choices? How does the concept of “freedom” play out in a diverse\, democratic society? \n6:00 pm – 7:00 pm\, doors at 5:30 pm \nAll are welcome. A $5 donation is encouraged.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: “Minidoka: An American Concentration Camp”
DESCRIPTION:Produced for Minidoka National Historic Site\, this film tells the story of a group of Americans and their incarceration by the U.S. government in the High Desert of southern Idaho\, purely on the basis of race. “Minidoka: An American Concentration Camp” explores the lasting impact of incarceration on Japanese-Americans\, through decades of shame and silence\, before the community took a stand for redress\, and examines the relevance of their story for civil rights today. Explore the exhibit about World War II imprisonment Witness to Wartime: The Painted Diary of Takuichi Fujii beforehand and hear from Friends of Minidoka Executive Director Mia Russell afterward about making the film.

SUMMARY:November Show at Tumalo Art Co. features Helen Brown
DESCRIPTION:“Pixels to Pigments”\, Helen Brown’s November show at Tumalo Art Co. features watercolors illustrating how one artist interprets the vision of another artist—a photographer. The show opens during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk\, November 1\, from 4-8pm. \nAsking her collectors\, friends and family to submit their favorite photos to her to serve as reference for her watercolors\, she received over 150 photos from 55 of them. Says Brown\, “I was overwhelmed\, but excited to choose and get started painting!” Unlike commission work\, the photographers are not obligated to purchase the work\, just to come and observe her interpretations. “I thought it would be fun to involve other people in the process\,” she explained. \nShe will show up to 15 watercolors depicting landscape\, animals\, figures and still life. In one painting\, she combined two photos into the same scene. “I’m not sure all the photographers will even recognize their photo in my paintings\, as I like to change the color scheme and composition to suit my eye.” \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. 541-385-9144. tumaloartco.com.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Witness to Wartime: The Painted Diary of Takuichi Fujii
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, the U.S. federal government incarcerated 120\,000 people of Japanese ancestry\, about two-thirds of whom were United States citizens. The government used racist propaganda and fear-based arguments to justify their actions. For those who were incarcerated—imprisoned without charge—the experience was life-changing. \nWitness to Wartime: The Painted Diary of Takuichi Fujii examines this painful chapter of American history. Artist Takuichi Fujii was among those imprisoned\, first at the Puyallup temporary detention camp on the Washington State Fairgrounds and then at Minidoka Relocation Center\, where he lived with his family for over three years.

SUMMARY:October Show at Tumalo Art Co. features Dorothy Freudenberg
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Dorothy Freudenberg’s show “Riverwalking”\, opening October 4\, from 4-8pm\, during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk\, embraces the simplicity gained from observing eloquent details of the same river landscape through a change of seasons. \nBest known for her highly articulated layered\, digital compositions\, for this body of work\, Dorothy frames a landscape she observes on her daily walk along the Deschutes River as it flows through the Old Mill District. A form of walking meditation\, the photos reveal insights and details we often miss in our hurried lives. “River walking” has been curated from literally thousands of images. \nWhile these images were collected along the river\, Dorothy made a closer correlation with music and imagery. An accomplished pianist\, she will be presenting a slide show combining her photographs with background music—a Chopin Nocturne—she is playing herself\, weaving her two creative loves into a visual/audio experience. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open everyday. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Bend! Boldly Went: Live Adventure Storytelling Show and Podcast Recording
DESCRIPTION:Come for an evening of sharing your adventure stories with others in the outdoor community. Settle in to listen or get prepared to share your adventure stories in 10 minutes or less from 7-9 PM. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. \nYou can’t shred gnar\, bomb down trail\, climb volcanoes\, and run whitewater all the time. But at Boldly Went we know that when you’re not\, you want to talk about your adventures with other people who get it – probably over beer. And every thru hiker\, trail runner\, mountain biker\, climber\, paddler\, sailor\, scuba diver\, flyer\, and Indiana Jones wannabe has at least one story that will inspire\, inform\, or at least entertain the rest of us\, so we’re pulling together crowds of you and randomly selecting you to go on stage to give us your best. \nHow it works: Event format is casual and starts with a brief review of how to tell a good outdoor adventure story. Anyone interested in telling a story will be encouraged to complete the storyteller sign up sheet throughout the evening. Of those signed up\, names are drawn at random. Selected individuals are given 10 minutes to tell their adventure story.\nStorytellers are judged by select audience members using criteria described in detail on the Boldly Went website. A winner is announced at the end of the evening. Stories are recorded and may be shared later in the weekly podcast.\nEveryone is welcome to attend and no one will be required or pressured to tell a story. \nSee the Boldly Went website for more details about what to expect at the event and tips for preparing your 10 minute story if you think you have one to share.
