SUMMARY:Going\, Going\, GONE...Vanishing Glaciers in the Deschutes Basin
DESCRIPTION:Oregon’s glaciers are the natural water reservoirs of the high Cascade water towers. Glacier meltwater sustains rivers during the late summer and fall for flora\, fauna and irrigation. The glacier melt chills streams for salmon and trout\, with the attendant effect of cooling surrounding forests that reduces fire risk and intensity. In short\, glaciers are an integral part of Central Oregon ecosystems and economies. \nAnd yet\, we do not know how many glaciers remain today in the basin\, let alone how many existed a century ago. In this talk\, Dr. Anders Carlson will present on the Oregon Glacier Institute’s findings from the first census of glaciers in Oregon since the 1950s. We will examine how these glacier changes are related to regional climate change\, concluding the discussion on what the future holds for the remaining glaciers in the Deschutes Basin.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk About Rural Food Security with Jillian Hishaw
DESCRIPTION:Why can’t farmers and farm workers afford to put food on the table? How do the very people that grow our food go hungry? High Desert Food and Farm Alliance is honored to welcome Jillian Hishaw to the (virtual) stage as she talks about the work she is doing in farming communities to reduce rates of food insecurity. Rural hunger is often a forgotten topic of focus in farming communities.  According to the USDA\, 84% of U.S. counties with the highest percentage of childhood hunger are rural.  Through F.A.R.M.S.\, Hishaw has focused on procuring and donating produce in rural farming communities over the past eight years.  Over one million pounds of produce have been donated in and outside of the US. The importance of infrastructure in rural communities and communal resolutions are essential to rural America’s revitalization. \nFunding for this event is provided through a USDA Community Food Projects (CFP) grant.

SUMMARY:May Exhibit at Tumalo Art Co.—"Earth+Feather" by Shelli Walters
DESCRIPTION:“Earth+Feather” features uplifting mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture by Shelli Walters\, opening May 7\, with an artists reception from 4-7pm. With an accent on birds\, this new work emerges from Shelli’s love for the Earth and wild creatures. “Animals hold such wisdom and the landscape such mystery. I enjoy expressing this connection in my art and sharing the sense of oneness and wonder I find in nature.” \nShelli shares her love of the natural world\, with layers upon layers of thoughts\, stories\, experiences\, moods — shifting one over the other — sometimes revealing a hint of what is underneath. This has become Shelli’s signature voice and style. Alternating layers of acrylic paint and collage\, creating richly textured and colorful pieces that invite you to look closer and discover your own story. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open seven days a week. Find out more at tumaloartco.com or reach us at 541-385-9144.

He grafted the French clones 667 and 777 on a portion of the vines wihen they became available. 91 points – Wine Enthusiast \n2018 Pere Ami Red Blend\nFounder Jim Bernau’s father\, Fred Bernau\, helped reestablish Oregon’s wine industry in the early 1960s when he assisted Richard Sommer of HillCrest Vineyard in getting one of the first winery licenses post-prohibition. Jim was 10 years old at the time\, so he and his brother Jerry were allowed small tastes of Richard Sommer’s wines at the dinner table. From those small tastes\, Jim’s passion for Oregon wine grew. It has always been a dream of his to make a wine dedicated to his father\, the help he provided to early Oregon wine pioneers and the passion he ignited in Jim. Currently\, Kriselle Cellars produces approximately 4\,000 cases of Oregon red and white varietals from grapes grown on our Estate vineyard\, as well as purchased from other local vineyards. \nHandcrafting elegant wines that showcase the unique character and fine quality of the Rogue Valley. The Kriselle Cellars Estate vineyard is home to the approximately 25 planted acres of grape. Our family vineyard is situated next to the beautiful Rogue River on a very unique site. Our grapes grow on a south-facing slope that is located between the Upper Table Rock Plateau and the Rogue River in southern Oregon. \nTasting Set Includes: \n2019 Sauvignon Blanc\nSnappy notes of fresh lime\, grapefruit are abundant in the welcoming aromas of Kriselle Cellars 2019 Sauvignon Blanc. Cabernet Franc provides structure and earthiness\, Cabernet Sauvignon delivers fresh berry fruit\, Malbec enriches the captivating coloration\, Merlot introduces plush softness\, and the hint of spice is all tempranillo. Together they create a singular expression of a wine rich with flavors and characteristics of the Rogue Valley Appelation. Di’tani is an incredible reflections of the soil and weather conditions of its orgin and reflects the “terrior” of this area. We find notes of huckleberries\, purple plums\, graphite\, and and vanilla engaging with integrated tannins\, and bright acidity. Exciting today\, built for tomorrow\, this wine is even more compelling as it opens in the glass or decanter. DESCRIPTION:Join J’Aime du Mauriée\, Tasting Host and Concierge\, Ken Wright Cellars\, will guide you through a tasting of their award winning wines. Virtual Event May 22. Ticket sales close May 3rd. \nOver 40 years of wine making has taught Ken a simple truth: source is everything. Located\, in rural Carlton\, Oregon\, Ken Wright Cellars is devoted to producing wine that showcase the inherent quality of world class vineyard sites. With a clarity and breadth that is unequaled\, Pinot noir is the ultimate vehicle for conveying the aroma\, flavor and texture of the location in which it is grown. \nIn 1986\, with family\, belongings and 10 barrels in tow\, Ken moved to McMinnville and started Panther Creek Cellars. His concept of focusing on vineyard-designate bottling began during those years at Panther Creek and this was cemented as a core philosophy in 1994 when Ken Wright Cellars was founded. Ken Wright Cellars now produces a single vineyard Pinot Noir from 13 different vineyard sites in the Northern Willamette Valley. \nOur approach to the craft of wine growing is one of stewardship rather than manipulation. We use organic certified practices as a base and expand upon that with advanced nutrition-based farming. By analyzing both our soil profile and vines\, maintaining proper crop levels\, personally sampling each vineyard\, and hand-sorting each cluster\, we ensure that the inherent character in the fruit is revealed in the finished wine. Minimal handling of wine is essential to preserve what it is; a gift of nature. \nGuests: J’Aime du Mauriée\, Ken Wright\, Tasting Host and Conceirge \nTasting Set Includes: \n2017 Pinot Blanc\, Freedom Hill Vineyard\n100% Pinot Blanc\, barrel fermented and barrel aged in neutral French oak barrels. Aromatically has bright notes of melon\, grapefruit\, butterscotch with refreshing acidity. It is very clean and focused on the palate. SUMMARY:June Exhibit—Journeys in Nature\, art by Sarah B Hansen
DESCRIPTION:Our June show\, “Journeys in Nature\, An Artist’s Exploration of Pacific NW Trails”\, presents contemporary landscape artist Sarah B Hansen’s latest exploration into her decades-long Northwest hiking journeys. Meet the artist Friday June 4\, from 4-7pm. \nInspired by her Pacific Northwest hikes\, and witnessing the increasing challenges of human impact on wilderness areas\, Hansen has created this selection of mixed media paintings focusing both on what it means to experience the unaffected wilderness\, and how our presence in those spaces alters its habitat. Working on cradled boards with water media\, collaged textures and handwriting\, Hansen creates art that leaves much to the imagination and gives a strong feeling of place. Many of her pieces are large\, capturing the monumental space in the landscape. Her mantra is\, “save wild spaces\, pick up your refuse\, tread lightly\, and speak quietly”.\nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. 541-385-9144; tumaloartco.com.
