SUMMARY:Brewer's Grade Band at General Duffy’s Waterhole
DESCRIPTION:General Duffy’s Waterhole is excited to host Brewer’s Grade Band on June 16\, 2023 as part of their 2023 Summer Kickin’ Concert Series in Downtown Redmond! Presented by Subaru of Bend. All ages welcome\, show starts at 7pm. \nBrewer’s Grade Band continues to blaze their own trail bringing their unique brand of Northwest Country music to the next level. Band member Joe Smart’s recent Grammy win recognizing his work on the O’Connor Band’s “Coming Home” Album of the Year has led to some exciting opportunities to collaborate with music’s biggest names including Paul Simon and Zac Brown Band! This has helped build even more momentum for the group leading to the main stage at many of the west coast’s top festivals and events\, genre-bending studio sessions and co-writes\, an independent film soundtrack credit and more opportunities to create and collaborate in the Northwest\, Nashville and beyond! They continue to push the envelope and advance their role as one of the region’s most sought after independent artists all while staying true to their Northwest Country roots. \nThe members of Brewer’s Grade Band are all life-long natives of the Pacific Northwest. More than 20 years have passed since lead singer Zac Grooms and drummer Cody Christopherson founded the first iteration of the band while still attending High School in the small Columbia River farm community of Arlington\, OR. Brothers Al and Nolan Hare who later joined the band as lead and bass guitarists were born and raised just 50 miles downriver in The Dalles\, OR. The group first met Joe Smart while recording at Rainmaker Studios near his home just up the river in Pasco\, WA. \nGrooms is the group’s primary songwriter. He began co-writing with his mother Susie Crosby during his early teen years\, and was quickly recognized for his talents as he began performing throughout the region. Success in the Country Showdown competition led to Grooms first solo EP recorded in Nashville with some of the top session players of the time! The two songs released from the first trip to the studio still continue to play a large role in BGB’s live shows. “If I Had My Way” received enough airplay to climb all the way the #1 position on the independent charts. “Outta Time” has been used to close nearly every live show for the past 20 years\, and received a refresher on the “Jumpin’ In” album in 2014. The depth and diversity of Zac’s songwriting paired with his confident stage presence and standout vocal abilities makes for a perfect centerpiece to build a band around. \nIt took some convincing at first for Cody Christopherson to put down his rock fist and start a country band\, but ever since day one his style and attitude has been an integral component in the development of the band’s identity. His diverse musical taste is a key ingredient in creating the unique sound of Brewers Grade Band. To this day\, he continues to devote the same tenacity that originally helped push the band to early success. \nAl Hare has long been recognized as a dynamic multi-genre guitarists. A last minute fill in gig in 2004 made Al stand out as the perfect fit for the rising modern country band. He hasn’t missed a show since. Al continues to be a driving force in the local music scene\, a popular guitar teacher\, and one of the West Coast’s finest Country lead guitarists. His style and technique on stage and in the studio along with his contagious passion for every note he plays keeps pushing the group’s live and recorded performances to new heights. \nMusic has always been a focal point in the life of Nolan Hare. He first took the stage in his early school days and has rarely been a member of the audience since. Nolan has been all-in ever since joining the band in 2008. With years of experience as an on-air personality\, a web designer\, an event promoter and entertainment director and small business owner\, his contributions on bass and vocals are only the tip of the iceberg of what he brings to the band’s table. \nJoe Smart is a Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist\, studio musician\, and producer who has been playing and performing music since the age of eight. He began on the guitar\, moving on to the fiddle\, mandolin\, and recently taking up the banjo and resonator guitar. With influences from Bach to Van Halen and everything between\, his musical style has been molded into a diverse amalgam of folk\, blues\, rock\, jazz\, and classical. Joe has performed all across the world and has worked with the biggest names in the business including Zac Brown Band\, Paul Simon and Mark O’Connor. Joe joined Brewer’s Grade 2011 after a successful studio session. \nSince the band’s inception all the way back in the Arlington High School days their number one goal has been to reach people with their original music. Through all of the twists and turns 20 years of life has brought\, this same purpose continues to be the main driving force behind the continuing evolution of the band\, and has undoubtedly shaped the content and style of their music for the better. They pride themselves in their ability to step onto any stage and entertain any audience with an authentic performance of music they have literally lived together rather than chosen out of a book at a publishing company. That is an achievement that no level of streams\, sales\, number of followers or any other standard unit of measuring success can come anywhere close to replicating. \nIf you ask any member of Brewer’s Grade Band what “Northwest Country” means\, you’ll likely get a slightly different answer from each of them\, but the common theme you’ll hear will be that it is a personal expression of their life experiences as seen through the lens of music. It isn’t pigeon holed into being defined as a sub-genre\, or specific sound or recipe for success. For them it is simply a lifestyle; and one they thoroughly enjoy and love to share! \nTheir home base of the Pacific Northwest\, and more specifically the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area\, is a major hub for outdoor lifestyle and activity with year-round opportunities for epic outdoor adventures. Mountains\, rivers\, lakes\, waterfalls\, rainforest\, desert scenic vistas and wildlife can all be found just moments away from wherever you are. Locally inspired food\, beer\, wine\, spirits\, and coffee all abound. The region is rich with historical treasures from Native American culture\, to Lewis & Clark’s expedition\, the Oregon Trail\, and so much more! You don’t have to look far for inspiration in a place like this. \nAs Brewer’s Grade Band continues to push to expand the reach of their music through traditional industry channels\, they are grateful for the opportunities they continue to have and the doors that keep opening toward their ultimate goal of reaching the most people possible with their unique brand of Northwest Country Music.

SUMMARY:Muscadine Bloodline at General Duffy’s Waterhole
DESCRIPTION:General Duffy’s Waterhole is excited to host Muscadine Bloodline on June 22\, 2023 as part of their 2023 Summer Kickin’ Concert Series in Downtown Redmond! Presented by Subaru of Bend. All ages welcome\, show starts at 7pm. \nProudly independent and unapologetically Southern\, country duo Muscadine Bloodline find their true voice on their upcoming new album\, Dispatch to 16th Ave. Charlie Muncaster and Gary Stanton grew up in Mobile\, Alabama\, but didn’t cross paths until they started to pursue their musical dreams. In 2012\, they forged a friendship when Stanton opened a show for Muncaster’s band at Soul Kitchen in Mobile. Charlie’s contemporary vocals complimented by Gary’s harmonies and masterful guitar licks showcase a powerfully refreshing mix of talent\, passion and unfiltered authenticity. Since naming themselves Muscadine Bloodline in 2015\, they’ve had two Billboard-charting critically-acclaimed EP’s\, have sold out shows across the country\, opened concerts for hundreds of artists and earned a standing ovation at their Grand Ole Opry debut in 2018. The guys’ Southern roots carry over to their band name as well: Muscadine grapes grow in South while Bloodline represents their heritage. For more information visit muscadinebloodline.com.

DESCRIPTION:General Duffy’s Waterhole is excited to host Toast & Jam on June 30\, 2023 as part of their 2023 Summer Kickin’ Concert Series in Downtown Redmond! Presented by Subaru of Bend. All ages welcome\, show starts at 7pm. \nThe original duo was created a few years ago\, when Jeff & Ben decided to get together to play some music. Not intending to start a band\, the guys took a few gigs locally\, playing their favorite songs from almost every genre of music. Just two guys and their friends and families who enjoy good music. But it was apparent to everyone who heard them\, that these two had something special. Someone even said they go together like “toast&jam”. \nAnd so the journey began. \nFast forward 4 years\, and The TNJ Band still features the one of a kind vocal duo made up of Jeff Miller and Ben Delery\, but now includes Russ Skelton and Bethany Willis. From the moment they start playing\, they have a sound that’s entirely their own. It’s a little bluesy\, a little country\, and a lot of soul infused magic. Brought together by a shared love of all styles of music\, TNJ is known for their 4 part harmonies and gritty vocals\, held together by an upright bass\, a fiddle and two guitars. The groups sound isn’t so much about the notes they sing or play\, but more about how their music makes you feel. Once you hear them\, you want to hear more. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old or somewhere in between\, there’s something for everyone when this band plays. \nCome join the Toast&Jam Family. We can’t wait to meet you!

SUMMARY:Cherry Poppin' Daddies at General Duffy’s Waterhole
DESCRIPTION:General Duffy’s Waterhole is excited to host Cherry Poppin’ Daddies on July 15\, 2023 as part of their 2023 Summer Kickin’ Concert Series in Downtown Redmond! Presented by Subaru of Bend. All ages welcome\, show starts at 7pm. \nIn the past few years Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have become the kind of band that you would want to book if you were throwing a soiree at the Gatsby mansion. Penning elegant\, lush\, pitch perfect arrangements of much of the great American songbook\, from Cole Porter to Frank Sinatra\, the Daddies have surprised many- likely familiar with them from the early 90’s- whose limited exposure to the band undoubtedly consists of an image of spray painted vans careening across the US as an iconoclastic\, misfit part of an already marginalized punk/ska scene. \nIn fact the Daddies have of late put together a number of excellent swing/ jazz sit down theatre type shows\, each tailored to a different era of swing music: a “Jazz Age Lawn Party” consisting of roaring 20’s and Cotton Club Era material\, a swanky “Live at the Sands” type tribute to the Rat Pack\, and a World War 2 “Christmas Canteen” show that is part Tiki\, part Benny Goodman and comes across like a radio broadcast from Guadalcanal circa 1942. The sheer craftsmanship and professional attention to detail of these performances have shed new light on this criminally underestimated band. \nOn top of being a show band nonpareil\, the Daddies have an “oh by the way” double platinum ability to pen original material that\, while influenced by a history of American popular music\, is wholly modern lyrically\, and itself stands up as classic. The 1997 release of Zoot Suit Riot set the bar for the neo-swing movement of the era in terms of originality\, lyrical depth\, and flat out musical sales. \nWhen you see the Daddies perform their original material you are struck by the poetry and audacity of artistic vision. Whole stirring narratives are laid down in swinging couplets that evince dual meaning and social critique. Consider Master and Slave from 1990… \n“Friends and Romans I’m your brother\nI’m scratchin’ to hang on\nThe pursuit of happiness is just a carpetbaggers con\nWhen a can of pork and beans could change my attitude\nYou wont give it up\, but I could’ve been you\nWhile the masters and the slaves scratch for pieces of the dream\nFor purple mountains majesty whatever the hell that means\nThey give up on each other and that’s the way they get ahead\nBut I can still see the stars\nThrough these red\, white and blue prison bars” \n…ok\, this is not Cole Porter clever\, but it’s not trying to be\, it’s something striving to be new\, to be challenging\, courageous\, and truthful. It’s not art simply designed to match the couch. What kind of band takes these kind of chances\, both musically and thematically? The Daddies\, that’s who. \nSinger songwriter/ bandleader Steve Perry puts it this way\, “Lately\, by laying our hands on the great American songbook\, we have been trying to fill in for audiences the historical back story of what inspires our original brand of Americana\, because in essence that is what I consider us to be\, an Americana band. But instead of taking mostly from a delta blues tradition- like many of the bands labeled “Americana”- we adhere mostly to a pre rock\, pre mid 50’s\, hot jazz and essentially Tin Pan Alley tradition. Then we attempt to deconstruct and détourne those set of tropes to fit modern themes\, be that something like child abuse or say the opioid crisis. It’s unfortunate\, but I believe it comforts modern audiences to see that we are able to play\, in an orthodox fashion\, material that is in the tradition\, before they allow us to reach out for something unfamiliar\, multifaceted\, or god forbid anti-bourgeois in point of view like many of our originals are” \nSadly\, over the past year the band has been laying low and playing a bit closer to home in order that Perry can be a caregiver to his wife\, business partner\, and video muse\, Yvette “Cherry” Perry who was recently diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. “This setback for our family has brought us closer to our fans\, who have been so giving of their best wishes and helping with small donations to Yvette’s cancer care. We pledge to continue our advocacy work nationally toward earlier colorectal screening protocols and baseline cancer research so that this scourge that has been loosed on so many families like ours can be wiped out sooner rather than later.” \nProximity to home has allowed the Eugene\, Oregon band to recently finish a new recording slated for release in late 2018 called Bigger Life. Perry says\, “Bigger Life is 14 songs that will allow us to touch base with our punk/ ska audience. We will continue to play the all swing\, classy theater type shows that are our bread and butter\, but in addition\, at some point in 2019 and 2020\, we would like to book a few special tours and play occasional festivals where we crank it up and play only ska punk\, hopefully joining forces with some of the bands that befriended us as we were all coming up in this business. This new record turned out really special and we are excited for people to get their ears on it.”

SUMMARY:Redwood Son at General Duffy’s Waterhole
DESCRIPTION:General Duffy’s Waterhole is excited to host Redwood Son on July 21\, 2023 as part of their 2023 Summer Kickin’ Concert Series in Downtown Redmond! Presented by Subaru of Bend. All ages welcome\, show starts at 7pm. \nRedwood Son’s Josh Malm is an anomaly. As he will tell you\, “Saying I’m not a simple man is an understatement. It’s more like\, people rarely know what I’m even doing. It’s just crazy-making\, odd behavior\, that quite frankly pisses a lot of folks off. People love me or they hate me\,” says the Portland\, Oregon-based musician who has spent four years seeing his latest\, Saints & Renegades come to light. With a release (vinyl\, CD\, and digital) finally set for September 28\, 2018\, unconventional is one way to sum up the man who goes by the moniker Redwood Son\, which is also his band’s name. \nIn 2016 he decided to pack up his bags from Portland\, while still working on finishing Saints & Renegades\, and move to Nashville\, to be closer to his ilk. While most artists would stay put to finish up their record\, Malm needed a change of scenery. While working on the eleven track collection of warm\, vintage-meets-contemporary country-soul-rock that would become Saints & Renegades\, Malm was also working on building his company\, Westicana\, both the label that releases his albums and a leading Northwest show promotion company. \nIn honor of Westicana\, and to celebrate the launch of the brand\, shortly after his move he released an EP\, aptly titled Westicana. As he puts it\, “The Westicana EP was intended to get some new music out there to my fans\, old and new\, while also building a brand for my own label\, Westicana Records\, and my show promotion company\, Westicana Presents.” \nThe result was staggering\, with Redwood Son and Westicana Records moving two thousand units without any press or radio coverage. \n“I played the Northwest like a cyclone\, with a blue collar approach that was borderline psycho\,” he says of the feat. “It didn’t go unnoticed\, but it also didn’t get any press either.” \nWith the EP out\, and a solid fan base awaiting the full-length album\, Malm focused back on the prize\, Saints & Renegades. The record chronicles his struggles\, depression\, fight\, and hopes with not only his move\, but his music career. With a theme of never giving up\, keep fighting\, stay honest\, and keep it real running through the album\, the eleven songs tell the story of both his journey to Nashville\, and his struggle to get the album released. \n“Saints & Renegades was something that struck me as a fitting title\, to represent the duality of the project. There is a certain amount of insanity that almost always comes with making a record. One day I may feel like a sensitive songwriter who aims to inspire people through my vulnerability – a saint. Then\, other days I am convinced that no one gives a shit about that\, and we all just need to rock and roll – a renegade\,” he says of the album’s title. “When I start letting insecurity take over\, it’s usually followed by a bit of rebellious rage. Once I work through that mess\, there is usually a sense of peace and indifference about music all together. It’s so strange to me.” \nThe album kicks off with the late-night\, dusty road county melody of “Comeback\,” a song that proclaims\, “I come back\, but I come back stronger. I’m not a simple man\, and you can count on that.” This serves as Malm’s anthem\, as we have already established that he’s anything but simple. \n“The lyrics on ‘Comeback\,’ especially that line\, are perfect for my unorthodox approach to everything in life\, especially my music career\,” says Malm of the aforementioned lyrics. “I’ve always been a comeback kid. My down\, but certainly-not-out mentality has gotten me through a ton of stuff over the years. Maybe it’s because I’m a leo or something\, but I feel like my music career has definitely gotten nine lives of a cat-level of survival.” \nMalm also got sober while making Saints & Renegades\, another mountain that added to the stresses and forces working against him\, but something he wasn’t willing to buckle under. This shows up in the lyrics and melodic mood of “You Know You\,” a song about self-doubt\, personal journeys\, and finding one’s true self. \n“Sinking to the bottom of the bottle\, drowning my sorrows\, drinking them down one swallow at a time. Trying to find my true self\, but my soul is so hollow\,” he opens the song with. However\, his sense of optimistic and personal strength shines through\, later singing\, “How you gonna know if you won’t even try it? How you going to live so afraid of dying? Open your mind and your heart will shine on through. Sometimes you want to fly\, but can’t let go. Sometimes you gotta climb\, when you know you’re gonna fall.” \nThe self-doubt that bogs Malm down at times is also one vehicle that helps drive him. He will quickly admit that he may indeed be his harshest critic\, as he attempts to discuss his favorite tracks on the album\, unable to pick just one. \n“Honestly\,” he says\, “I’ve gone back and forth so many times between hating it\, and loving it\, that I am just content now. It’s really just a solid album of songs that mean something. If I had to choose one though\, it’d be ‘Punches.’ There’s nothing I have ever done that encapsulated all of my influences perfectly into three minutes like ‘Punches’ does.” \n“Punches” asks\, “Tell me\, am I the only one that still hasn’t figured it out?” as the song encompasses influences ranging between indie-rock and subdued Americana\, all with an undertow of soul brought on by the temporary flood of keyboards. \nWhile he ponders his own question himself\, Malm will tell you he’s quite happy with how the record turned out\, refusing to look back as he moves forward. \n“I can’t even go there. There are way too many rabbit holes to get lost in. It is a Pandora’s Box I choose not to open. My lessons have been noted and I will do my best to not repeat mistakes that were made along the way. There are far too many to discuss now. It would just be counterproductive. I am happy with where things are at.” \nThere is plenty of time – and moments – to look back on during the making of this record\, with four years passing before it came to fruition\, a timeline Malm didn’t plan on\, nor could he have ever envisioned it would take this long. \n“I did not envision it taking four years to finally release! That was a big surprise. Life just kept kicking my ass\, and I went back and forth so much on whether the record was even worth it or not.” \nThough\, as much as there is gloom\, Malm\, like the songs and melodies on Saints & Renegade\, always sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Reflecting on it all and looking back at the time it took to make this record and see it finally set for release\, Malm points out a surprising fact: “Oddly enough\, we are doing the release in September\, which is exactly four and a half years from the time we started the project.” \nHe is most excited about finally seeing one of his albums released on vinyl. \n“I knew from the very start that I was going to do a vinyl release. This record needed to be heard in that way. No matter what\, I was going to see that through if it killed me. Guess I survived it\, though\,” he says with laughter and a smile. Though\, in a lot of ways\, the record almost did kill him. \nPaying homage to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers\, while recalling the likes of Jack Johnson\, Eric Church\, and Ryan Bingham\, Redwood Son did what it set out to do\, even if it took a move to Nashville to find himself\, a move back to Portland to realize that is where he needed to be\, and four years; Malm and company created a warm\, vintage-meets-contemporary country-soul-rock that he can hold his head high on and be very proud of. \n“The highlights are pretty much all tied up in the journey\,” reflects Malm. “There were a lot of lows\, but also lots of highs. Mostly though\, there were lots of reminders about how crazy we are as artists to take this path in life. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else though. Period. Music and this insane industry get me going and the blood boiling and a smile on my face.” \nNow Malm’s only goal is to keep his head high and aim for the sky\, because if Saints & Renegades has taught him anything\, it’s that he may not have it all figured out just yet\, but he knows the direction he wants to travel\, and he knows his tenacity and uncompromising passion will lead him to his destination.

SUMMARY:Lonestar at General Duffy’s Waterhole
DESCRIPTION:General Duffy’s Waterhole is excited to host Lonestar on July 28\, 2023 as part of their 2023 Summer Kickin’ Concert Series in Downtown Redmond! Presented by Subaru of Bend. All ages welcome\, show starts at 4pm. \nNot every musician has the opportunity to revisit and even potentially improve upon their biggest hits. But on the forthcoming TEN to 1 record\, the award-winning band Lonestar— Dean Sams (keyboards\, acoustic guitar\, background vocals)\, Michael Britt (lead guitarist\, background vocals)\, Keech Rainwater (drums) and Drew Womack (lead vocals\, guitar)—are taking a fresh look at all 10 of their chart-topping country songs. \nThis streak started in 1996 with the band’s second single\, the rock-edged “No News\,” which describes a man left bereft (and confused) when his girlfriend suddenly disappears\, and the following year’s tender “Come Cryin’ to Me” and “Everything’s Changed.” The band’s quadruple-platinum 1999 album Lonely Grill spawned four No. 1 hits (including the beloved global smash “Amazed”) and established Lonestar as music’s preeminent pop-country band—a status they’d maintain through the 2000s and beyond\, thanks to songs full of energy and creative lyrics (“What About Now”) and (“Mr. Mom”)\, along with heartfelt messages and soaring melodies (“I’m Already There”). \nWith these re-recordings\, the band members were mindful of striking a balance between preserving the sonic elements fans were familiar with—and not repeating them. “It was a high wire act trying to figure out how to change it a little bit and not throw people off too much\,” Britt says. “I’ve seen bands that when they do the big hits that I know\, and they change it up too much\, I feel disappointed. I think people want to sing along—the vocal melody is what people really are latching onto the majority of time. \n“That’s what was in everybody’s minds when we were trying to come up with different arrangements\, was trying to keep the vocal melody true\,” he continues. “Don’t change it so much that people go\, ‘That’s not even the same song.'” \nAs a result\, many of Lonestar’s re-recordings have merely cosmetic updates and changes. “Mr. Mom” is “a little bit more country-sounding\,” Britt says\, while Sams created some loops for “Smile” to “make it more modern-feeling\, and have a little more motion\,” he says. “It’s a little bigger-sounding than what the original record is. We kept most of the songs pretty close to the originals\, but with just more updated\, modern sounds.” \nThe changes to “Amazed\,” meanwhile\, reflect the power ballad’s status as an exclamation mark during concerts. “Since it’s usually the biggest part or finale of the show\, we’ve made it a little bit more bombastic\,” Britt says. “We didn’t want to change it so much as just to make it more epic.” \nTEN to 1 reflects the ways Lonestar’s hits have evolved over the years during the band’s rousing\, high-energy concerts. For example\, Britt improvised a guitar solo in the studio for the new version of “Tell Her\,” just as he’s done live in the last few years. \n“We’ve all played these songs live so much that we’ve morphed them over the years and play them a little bit differently\,” Sams says. “In re-recording them\, it was taking all the different things that we have done and harnessing it into the best direction for today. Michael’s got a lot better guitar sounds than he had when we made a lot of these hits; Keech has better drums.” Sams also produced the TEN to 1 record sessions\, and he approached the songs with fresh ears from both a musical and studio perspective. “I had to look at the music this time\, like\, ‘As not only a band member\, but as the producer of this record\, how can I keep the integrity of what made the songs the hits they were—but also update them so when people listen to them\, there’s something unique and different about them that catches their ear for today’s time?'” \nPerhaps the biggest example of this contemporary updating is “Come Cryin’ to Me\,” which the band members agree is the biggest sonic departure. A particular concert by indie-folk act The Lumineers inspired a completely new direction for the song; Lonestar’s updated version has gang vocals\, four-on-the-floor beats\, and percussion that adds a galloping vibe. \nWomack\, who joined the group in early 2021\, also put his own soulful spin on the songs\, and brought his deep experience recording session and lead vocals to the studio process. “I sat there and listened to each song about 20 times\, and the phrasing and the feel of the new tracks\, and tried to absorb it to where I can sing it in one take\,” he says. “And then I went in and sang four or five passes\, and then go back and listen to it and choose the best track.” \nThe vocalist is also no stranger to chart success. He co-wrote Kenny Chesney’s first No. 1 hit\, “She’s Got It All\,” while his former band\, Sons of the Desert\, also had multiple country hits in the ’90s and collaborated with Lee Ann Womack on her crossover hit “I Hope You Dance.” Drew Womack also has deep personal and professional ties to his new band; Sons of the Desert crossed paths with Lonestar many times\, even opening shows for them early on. \n“We actually covered a couple of the songs that I’m re-recording\,” Womack says. “It’s surreal re-recording for a greatest hits record songs that I covered back when I was 23\, 24. But it’s been great. We have very similar tastes in music and similar temperaments. And I’ve always been a band guy from day one—so this is just like coming home\, like flopping right back into a band. It feels right to me.” \nThe rest of Lonestar also speak of how easily Womack fit into the lineup. “Everybody has a best friend somewhere—and then all of a sudden\, at the job that you love\, you get to work with them every day\,” Rainwater says. “It’s a great feeling that one of your good friends is now one of your bandmates. And it shows on stage when we play—it comes through in the music a little bit\, in the attitude and the stage presence.” \nAdds Sams: “His vocals are soulful. What I love about him is that you feel every word that he sings\, which is probably the biggest compliment I can give. He has this really unique way of attaching himself to the lyric of the song and making the audience that is listening to him feel what he is feeling. It’s a gift.” \nLonestar’s roots date back to the early ’90s\, when Sams originally moved to Nashville from his native Texas intending to be a solo artist. However\, after a few months\, he realized that he was better suited for a band and recruited Britt and Rainwater. \nLonestar found success out of the gate with their self-titled 1995 debut\, which spawned the hit “Tequila Talkin'” along with “No News.” \nOther honors soon followed: The band has won many of music’s top honors\, including Academy Of Country Music awards for New Vocal Group in 1996\, and Single and Song Of The Year in 2000\, along with Humanitarian Of The Year in 2002. They also won Country Music Association’s Vocal Group of the Year and International Artist Achievement award in 2001. All told\, Lonestar have sold more than 10.5 million records since their formation. \nSams and Womack have already started writing new songs together\, which has been a hugely positive creative experience. “We jelled very quickly\,” Sams says. “When something feels comfortable\, it really makes the creative process much more enjoyable and fun\, and it actually doesn’t feel like work. Drew is such a positive person and he fits in with me\, Michael and Keech so much. And there’s just this newfound energy and life that we haven’t had for some time.” \nAnd so as Lonestar looks toward a big career milestone—the band is celebrating 30 years in 2022—and the release of TEN to 1\, they are full of gratitude for what they’ve accomplished already\, and excited about what the future holds. “People that we used to look up to back in the day—like the Rolling Stones\, Boston\, and even bands like Alabama—they’re older than us\,” Rainwater says. “We look up to those people as like the senior class. But now we are sort of the senior class that people seem to look up to and ask questions about and ask for our expertise.” \nAdds Sams: “It’s amazing that we’re still standing and putting on great shows after all these years. The fans are still coming out to our shows night after night\, to see us and hear our music. That’s almost 30 years of touring\, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am—and I’ve never once taken it for granted.”
