SUMMARY:May Group Exhibit ”Bloom” at Tumalo Art Co.
DESCRIPTION:Our May Group Exhibit\, “Bloom”\, moves past the garden gate to celebrate the many ways we unfold. The show opens May 1\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk. \nBeyond the petal and the vine\, “blooming” is a state of being.\nA courageous\, quiet riot of becoming exactly who and what we were meant to be. The works gathered in the show from our group of artists\, in all media\, and expressions of the theme\, and sizes from small to large\, capture those fleeting\, beautiful seconds of transition\, exploring the gentle strength it takes to open up after a long winter. Both metaphorically and physically. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open seven days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:"Connections"—3 Artists Paint in the Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Tracy Leagjeld\, Sarah B. Hansen and Susan Luckey Higdon open a shared exhibit\, “Connections”\, at Tumalo Art Co.\, April 3\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk. \nThe three friends have been painting together en plein air since 2019 in the Central Oregon Cascades. Each fall\, they gather for the annual trip\, camping for several nights\, spending their days painting on site\, immersed in the landscape. At the heart of their tradition is connection—to one another\, to the creative process\, and to nature herself. Returning home\, each artist carries fresh inspiration and a renewed sense of purpose into the studio\, completing more deeply felt works that reflect the shared experience and the landscape that shaped it. Plein air paintings\, made within speaking distance of each other\, will be shown along with larger studio pieces. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open seven days a week. For more information check tumaloartco.com or call 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:November—Anne Gibson\, "Reflections & Reveries"
DESCRIPTION:Anne Gibson opens “Reflections and Reveries” November 7\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk. Please come for our opening reception and also enjoy the exhibit through the end of the month. \nIn this body of work painter Anne Gibson considers reflections and what is true? The reflection in the water is real\, but it’s not necessarily what you see above the waterline. Is what you remember truer than a photo snapped in the moment? Truth can be deceptive. Anne Gibson primarily sees ‘place’ as her inspiration. She finds herself moved to paint places and memories that fill her heart. Yet recently\, she has also been exploring how to portray what breaks her heart as well. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open seven days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:September Exhibit at Tumalo Art Co—Adell Shetterly "Throughline"
DESCRIPTION:Printmaker Adell Shetterly opens “Throughline”\, September 5\, with a reception from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk. \nThroughline speaks not only to what connects these works\, but also what connects Adell to the practice of printmaking itself. It’s about trust in process\, in repetition\, in growth and progression; a celebration of the tactile language of printmaking. “There’s no single narrative here\, but perhaps\, in the rhythm\, the spaces or the edges where the shapes meet you’ll discover a thread in the spaces between that resonates quietly or feel unexpectedly familiar echoing your own story.” \nAdell works in a range of printmaking techniques\, including monotype\, monoprint\, collagraph\, and linocut\, at times integrating mixed media. For her\, the heart of her work lies not only in the finished piece but in the journey of discovering it—a pursuit of creativity\, curiosity\, and connection. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Untamed Bloom in August with Sarah B. Hansen
DESCRIPTION:Sarah B. Hansen opens her August exhibit\, “Untamed Bloom”\, at Tumalo Art Co. on August 1\, from 3-7 pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk. \n“Untamed Bloom” is a series that celebrates the wild\, resilient energy of nature and the human spirit. Inspired by wildflowers that thrive in unexpected places\, these paintings explore emotional depth through color\, movement\, and the use of negative space. Each piece reflects a different state of being—vibrant\, unraveled\, quiet\, or bold. This series is a tribute to resilience\, to beauty that refuses to be contained\, and to the emotional wilderness we all carry within. The mixed media paintings in this exhibit are large format\, creating a strong presence. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:"Spirit Takes Flight"\, Danae Bennett-Miller June Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“Spirit Takes Flight”\, an exhibit of sculpture and original monoprints by Danae Bennett-Miller opens June 6\, from 3-7pm\, during the First Friday Gallery Walk in the Old Mill District. \nDanae’s sculptures and original monoprints use organic shapes and rich but subtle colors to capture the essence of the animals that surround her during her daily life on the ranch. These sculptures of birds\, deer\, and elk dance with life. Her One-of-a-kind bronze sculptures are part of the cultural landscape in Bend through public placements. \nEach sculpture is made from multiple pieces of flowed wax that when cast in bronze or glass have an organic quality that seems to interpret the animals energy. Danae creates 2D mixed media works that combine torn monoprint collages placed onto cradled board with several layers of poured resin\, building up the surface with more texture\, lines between each layer of resin. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District and open seven days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:May Exhibit at Tumalo Art Co.—Shelli Walters "Open Nature"
DESCRIPTION:Shelli Walters May exhibit\, “Open Nature”\, at Tumalo Art Co. features new mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture. The opening reception is May 2\, during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 3-7pm in the Old Mill District. \nSays Shelli about her art process—”Being in nature opens us up. Releasing us from negative thoughts and energy. Inviting harmony back into our lives. Creating art is a natural extension of this experience. This art/nature connection is the heart of my work\,” \nWith a lifetime of art making and design experience at her fingertips Shelli digs into the use of alternative tools to apply paint. Splashes\, drips\, bold smears of color\, juxtaposed with delicate textures scratched into paint\, bits of handwriting and type echo the bold and subtle qualities found in nature. All play so beautifully together – making everything come alive amidst the inviting color palette. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com\, 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Katherine Taylor — Painting the Invisible: Unveiling What’s Under the Sheen
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Taylor is “Painting the Invisible: Unveiling What’s Under the Sheen” for her exhibit opening August 2\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk. \nA classically trained artist\, Katherine Taylor is focusing her August exhibit on depicting the underlying mystery of her subjects\, to understand the invisible qualities lurking just below the surface of a person\, animal\, landscape or even a bowl of fruit. “My attempt is to break through the sheen of realism to a deeper level of meaning.” \nCreating an accurately rendered work of art doesn’t make it one that touches the soul. Mastery can only be achieved when an artist goes beyond realism to capture the ‘essence’ of their subject. Light energy is mystical and helps to reveal ‘essence’. An artist can capture ‘essence’ by depicting movement and rhythm. Or by capturing the underlying emotion or the electromagnetic wavelength of light that makes and object visible. The reason that Katherine concentrates on painting the light surrounding a subject as much as the subject itself. \nAll the paintings in this body of work are Katherine’s attempt to paint the invisible\, inspired by Rick Rubin’s wise adage: “Artists allow us to see what we are unable to see\, but somehow already know.” \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open seven days a week. SUMMARY:"Stillness"\, new work by Nancy Becker & Susan Luckey Higdon
DESCRIPTION:“Stillness”\, art inspired by natures deep hush\, opens May 3\, from 3-7pm at Tumalo Art Co. during the Old Mill Districts First Friday Gallery Walk. The exhibit combines the glowing transparency of Nancy Becker’s hand-blown glass with Susan Luckey Higdon’s poetic landscape paintings. \nWith a similar sensibility for color and a shared sense of awe for what is communicated by nature\, glass artist Nancy Becker and painter Susan Luckey Higdon enjoy displaying their work together and seeing the energy it creates. Designing the gallery’s exhibit space with both 2D and 3D pieces leads to a stunning synchronicity as the artworks ‘speak’ to each other. Susan’s images come from time spent in the high Cascades painting plein air in the late autumn and Nancy’s fluid use of color and shape in her glass blowing is her response to living and working on her land. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:"Rising Air – Plein Air to Studio" Sarah B. Hansen in April
DESCRIPTION:Tumalo Art Co. presents Sarah B. Hansen’s\, “Rising Air—Plein Air to Studio”\, opening April 5\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk. The exhibit encompasses a collection of plein air paintings created in some of Sarah’s favorite locations in Central Oregon\, Colorado\, and the Pacific Northwest\, alongside large studio works inspired by of the plein air pieces.\nWhen immersed in nature\, painting what is before her\, Sarah says she absorbs the joy and peaceful energy. “Surrounded by the sounds of birds\, wind\, animals\, insects…my shoulders relax and my mind goes blank. Hours can pass of sheer bliss. The abundance of life works its way into my paintings\, becoming a statement on place; a relief from modern life.” See Sarah’s process through art painted in real time onsite\, and the large pieces painted in studio.\nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. SUMMARY:"Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination” digital media by Dorothy Freudenberg
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Freudenberg’s September exhibit\, “Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination”\, opening September 1\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk\, features digital media exploding with color and nuance. \nWhen Dorothy Freudenberg arrived in Bend many years ago\, her garden became the focal point of her burgeoning photography experiences. Eventually she expanded the concept interpreting the whole planet as a huge\, interconnected garden—one that supports all of life. From using only the camera lens to create images\, she moved into exploring digital media which lends itself particularly well to the development of metaphorical creations that have their basis in the real world\, but then transcend the literal. On her almost daily early morning walks (often in the Old Mill District\, along the river paths) Dorothy photographs nature as it is\, creating stunning ethereal images of patterns and textures of flora and fauna often overlooked as mundane. Then\, taking bits and pieces from all of these photographs\, she creates images digitally that have their basis in the real world\, but become pure emotion and imagination. \n“While I love to photograph nature as it is\, I also cannot limit my imagination to simply accept this as the final means of expression. Nature is the inspiration\, the mind is the means to embellish and find sublime pleasure in the imagination’s play.” \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Sun Garden—new mixed media paintings from Shelli Walters
DESCRIPTION:Tumalo Art Company’s August exhibit\, Sun Garden\, features new mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture by Shelli Walters. The opening reception takes place August 4\, during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 3-7pm in the Old Mill District. \nVisitors to the gallery in August will be treated to an uplifting stroll through whimsical imagined gardens in Shelli’s Sun Garden series. Shelli says this body of work flowed out over the past year in response to the loss of her Mom. Her grief and a complex estate management process had her craving moments of peace and simplicity. \nIn the studio her garden experience spills out in acrylic paint\, collage\, graphite and crayon on 24”x12” canvas panels creating mural-like impression of a blissful day in the garden. Paper mache sculptures of deer and birds on bicycles\, complement the two-dimensional work. Shelli enjoys repurposing materials to forge these whimsical creations giving what would otherwise end up in the trash or recycle bin a joyful new place in the world. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:May Exhibit features watercolors by Helen Brown
DESCRIPTION:Our May exhibit\, “The Spectrum of Birthstones”\, opening May 5\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk will include twelve new watercolor paintings by Helen Brown\, each focused on one gemstone’s color. The subject of her work is broad\, including landscapes\, flowers and even an automobile. \nWhat better way to study color than to concentrate on the 12 birthstones of the calendar? Helen will do just that in her May show. “I like the idea of examining color as a gem because each stone reflects many variations of its color through facets and light.” Painting on rice paper with a watercolor batik technique her strikingly detailed paintings have texture and clarity and regularly wins awards in juried watercolor exhibits. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District and is open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Equilux—March Group Show at Tumalo Art Co.
DESCRIPTION:For March\, the artists in Tumalo Art Co. create art about the “Equilux” with a group exhibit opening March 3\, from 3-7pm during the First Friday Gallery Walk in the Old Mill District. \nTwice a year\, day and night reach a perfect balance of 12 hours each\, creating a little-known event called the Equilux. The Equilux happens just a few days before the much more well-known equinox\, which happens March 20 this year. Equilux means “equal light” in Latin and describes when day and night are equal. \nThis is a compelling subject for artists who are often enthralled by that moment when day becomes night and the incredible light effects that are produced. Art in many mediums and sizes will describe the effect of light and dark on the land and objects in this exhibit.

SUMMARY:November Exhibit Features Nancy Becker and Susan Luckey Higdon
DESCRIPTION:Glass artist Nancy Becker and landscape painter Susan Luckey Higdon are combining their love of color and shape in “Dreaming of Water”\, opening November 4 from 3-7pm\, during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk. \nFinding an affinity that resonates for both artists about the mystery and movement of water\, Nancy and Susan have joined forces to create art in their respective mediums\, in 2D and 3D for this November exhibit. Glass becomes liquid when heated\, swirling with color that Nancy shapes with mastery and wizardry into vessels and vases. Susan is transfixed with the movement and color of water\, capturing it’s many reflections and layers with paint and texture. Both artists have been working in their chosen mediums for over 30 years. They continue to challenge themselves to interpret nature in a way that connects emotionally\, intuitively and joyfully with the viewer.

SUMMARY:"The Shape of Water"—fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson in August
DESCRIPTION:“The Shape of Water”\, fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson\, opens August 6\, at Tumalo Art Co. from 3-7 pm for the Old Mill District’s First Friday Art Walk. Jackson invites you to look below the surface and imagine the role water plays in shaping the subject matter of each photograph. Most of us relate to water as an essential element for survival\, rarely considering how water has effects nearly everything we encounter in life. SUMMARY:June Exhibit—Journeys in Nature\, art by Sarah B Hansen
DESCRIPTION:Our June show\, “Journeys in Nature\, An Artist’s Exploration of Pacific NW Trails”\, presents contemporary landscape artist Sarah B Hansen’s latest exploration into her decades-long Northwest hiking journeys. Meet the artist Friday June 4\, from 4-7pm. \nInspired by her Pacific Northwest hikes\, and witnessing the increasing challenges of human impact on wilderness areas\, Hansen has created this selection of mixed media paintings focusing both on what it means to experience the unaffected wilderness\, and how our presence in those spaces alters its habitat. Working on cradled boards with water media\, collaged textures and handwriting\, Hansen creates art that leaves much to the imagination and gives a strong feeling of place. Many of her pieces are large\, capturing the monumental space in the landscape. Her mantra is\, “save wild spaces\, pick up your refuse\, tread lightly\, and speak quietly”.\nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. 541-385-9144; tumaloartco.com.
