SUMMARY:"Rising Air – Plein Air to Studio" Sarah B. Hansen in April
DESCRIPTION:Tumalo Art Co. presents Sarah B. Hansen’s\, “Rising Air—Plein Air to Studio”\, opening April 5\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk. The exhibit encompasses a collection of plein air paintings created in some of Sarah’s favorite locations in Central Oregon\, Colorado\, and the Pacific Northwest\, alongside large studio works inspired by of the plein air pieces.\nWhen immersed in nature\, painting what is before her\, Sarah says she absorbs the joy and peaceful energy. “Surrounded by the sounds of birds\, wind\, animals\, insects…my shoulders relax and my mind goes blank. Hours can pass of sheer bliss. The abundance of life works its way into my paintings\, becoming a statement on place; a relief from modern life.” See Sarah’s process through art painted in real time onsite\, and the large pieces painted in studio.\nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. Call 541-385-9144 or check our website at tumaloartco.com for more information.

SUMMARY:"Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination” digital media by Dorothy Freudenberg
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Freudenberg’s September exhibit\, “Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination”\, opening September 1\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk\, features digital media exploding with color and nuance. \nWhen Dorothy Freudenberg arrived in Bend many years ago\, her garden became the focal point of her burgeoning photography experiences. Eventually she expanded the concept interpreting the whole planet as a huge\, interconnected garden—one that supports all of life. From using only the camera lens to create images\, she moved into exploring digital media which lends itself particularly well to the development of metaphorical creations that have their basis in the real world\, but then transcend the literal. On her almost daily early morning walks (often in the Old Mill District\, along the river paths) Dorothy photographs nature as it is\, creating stunning ethereal images of patterns and textures of flora and fauna often overlooked as mundane. Then\, taking bits and pieces from all of these photographs\, she creates images digitally that have their basis in the real world\, but become pure emotion and imagination. \n“While I love to photograph nature as it is\, I also cannot limit my imagination to simply accept this as the final means of expression. Nature is the inspiration\, the mind is the means to embellish and find sublime pleasure in the imagination’s play.” \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Sun Garden—new mixed media paintings from Shelli Walters
DESCRIPTION:Tumalo Art Company’s August exhibit\, Sun Garden\, features new mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture by Shelli Walters. The opening reception takes place August 4\, during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 3-7pm in the Old Mill District. \nVisitors to the gallery in August will be treated to an uplifting stroll through whimsical imagined gardens in Shelli’s Sun Garden series. Shelli says this body of work flowed out over the past year in response to the loss of her Mom. Her grief and a complex estate management process had her craving moments of peace and simplicity. \nIn the studio her garden experience spills out in acrylic paint\, collage\, graphite and crayon on 24”x12” canvas panels creating mural-like impression of a blissful day in the garden. Paper mache sculptures of deer and birds on bicycles\, complement the two-dimensional work. Shelli enjoys repurposing materials to forge these whimsical creations giving what would otherwise end up in the trash or recycle bin a joyful new place in the world. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:May Exhibit features watercolors by Helen Brown
DESCRIPTION:Our May exhibit\, “The Spectrum of Birthstones”\, opening May 5\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk will include twelve new watercolor paintings by Helen Brown\, each focused on one gemstone’s color. The subject of her work is broad\, including landscapes\, flowers and even an automobile. \nWhat better way to study color than to concentrate on the 12 birthstones of the calendar? Helen will do just that in her May show. “I like the idea of examining color as a gem because each stone reflects many variations of its color through facets and light.” Painting on rice paper with a watercolor batik technique her strikingly detailed paintings have texture and clarity and regularly wins awards in juried watercolor exhibits. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District and is open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:Equilux—March Group Show at Tumalo Art Co.
DESCRIPTION:For March\, the artists in Tumalo Art Co. create art about the “Equilux” with a group exhibit opening March 3\, from 3-7pm during the First Friday Gallery Walk in the Old Mill District. \nTwice a year\, day and night reach a perfect balance of 12 hours each\, creating a little-known event called the Equilux. The Equilux happens just a few days before the much more well-known equinox\, which happens March 20 this year. Equilux means “equal light” in Latin and describes when day and night are equal. \nThis is a compelling subject for artists who are often enthralled by that moment when day becomes night and the incredible light effects that are produced. Art in many mediums and sizes will describe the effect of light and dark on the land and objects in this exhibit.

SUMMARY:November Exhibit Features Nancy Becker and Susan Luckey Higdon
DESCRIPTION:Glass artist Nancy Becker and landscape painter Susan Luckey Higdon are combining their love of color and shape in “Dreaming of Water”\, opening November 4 from 3-7pm\, during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk. \nFinding an affinity that resonates for both artists about the mystery and movement of water\, Nancy and Susan have joined forces to create art in their respective mediums\, in 2D and 3D for this November exhibit. Glass becomes liquid when heated\, swirling with color that Nancy shapes with mastery and wizardry into vessels and vases. Susan is transfixed with the movement and color of water\, capturing it’s many reflections and layers with paint and texture. Both artists have been working in their chosen mediums for over 30 years. They continue to challenge themselves to interpret nature in a way that connects emotionally\, intuitively and joyfully with the viewer.

SUMMARY:Dee McBrien-Lee—"Tale of Two Deserts" in October
DESCRIPTION:Dee McBrien-Lee’s new series\, “Tale of Two Deserts”\, opens October 1\, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Art Walk. Wines from VaPiano and Evoke with be served along with appetizers. \n“Tale of Two Deserts” takes us from the high desert environment of Central Oregon to the red rock country of Southern Utah. Deeply in love with both places\, Dee was inspired to create this series after a spring trip to the St. George area of Utah where she was struck by the vast differences of the places. Reflected in these works\, which range from wide open spaces to intimate canyons and secret spots\, are her feelings about the two deserts\, represented in both abstract and a more traditional style. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. SUMMARY:"The Shape of Water"—fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson in August
DESCRIPTION:“The Shape of Water”\, fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson\, opens August 6\, at Tumalo Art Co. from 3-7 pm for the Old Mill District’s First Friday Art Walk. Jackson invites you to look below the surface and imagine the role water plays in shaping the subject matter of each photograph. Most of us relate to water as an essential element for survival\, rarely considering how water has effects nearly everything we encounter in life. Join us in witnessing water in a whole new context. \nSince his iconic photograph and subsequent sold-out poster of Mt. Bachelor over 25 years ago\, Bruce’s finely tuned eye for the eloquence of nature\, and patience in getting the perfect shot\, has made him one of Oregon’s most loved photographers. From natures abstractions to the panoramic landscape in all of its majesty\, he finds the precise moment to capture the essence of his subjects and has won numerous awards for his stunning photographs. \nTumalo Art Co. is a an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:June Exhibit—Journeys in Nature\, art by Sarah B Hansen
DESCRIPTION:Our June show\, “Journeys in Nature\, An Artist’s Exploration of Pacific NW Trails”\, presents contemporary landscape artist Sarah B Hansen’s latest exploration into her decades-long Northwest hiking journeys. Meet the artist Friday June 4\, from 4-7pm. \nInspired by her Pacific Northwest hikes\, and witnessing the increasing challenges of human impact on wilderness areas\, Hansen has created this selection of mixed media paintings focusing both on what it means to experience the unaffected wilderness\, and how our presence in those spaces alters its habitat. Working on cradled boards with water media\, collaged textures and handwriting\, Hansen creates art that leaves much to the imagination and gives a strong feeling of place. Many of her pieces are large\, capturing the monumental space in the landscape. Her mantra is\, “save wild spaces\, pick up your refuse\, tread lightly\, and speak quietly”.\nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. 541-385-9144; tumaloartco.com.

SUMMARY:Printmaker Adell Shetterly with "Impressions" in November
DESCRIPTION:Printmaker Adell Shetterly’s exhibit of hand-pulled prints\, “Impressions”\, opens at Tumalo Art Co. November 6\, from 4-7pm. The show highlights a variety of print processes from monotype\, monoprint\, collagraph and combinations of print forms and media. From memories and moments in time\, Adell’s images integrate abstraction\, withcolor and texture inspired by natural environs. \nMuch like the first impressions we make on others upon a first meeting\, the first impressions made from a plate as it contacts a sheet of paper pulled through a press deeply influence the direction of the printmaker. Each print technique creates unique effects that cannot be created by any other means. \n“Many of my works are inspired by encounters with nature and recorded with photography to be brought forth at a later date to explore the question\, ‘What if’? What if I focus on just this piece in the photo? What if I quiet my mind and remember the sense of place or feeling from this photo?”\, explains Adell. “I am fascinated by printmaking as an art form; there are so many permutations. Design possibilities\, techniques and variations in each technique provide hours of creative exploration. Every new work reinforces what I do know and it also instigates excitement for what comes next. Printmaking is innovative\, creative and wide open to interpretation. It has its own lexicon and l hope\, lasting impressions.” \nTumalo Art Co is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

Rafting and kayaking wild waters brings him to hidden places only seen from the water\, and inspires him to capture the essence of these rare places. “Hydro Logic”\, opening Friday\, October 2\, from 4-7pm\, brings together new images from David’s recent trips to many of his favorite rivers. \nPainting plein-air on long river floats deep into scenic areas\, David then goes to his studio and paints many of the images on larger canvases. SUMMARY:Dee McBrien-Lee\, presents "Vertical Interlude" at Tumalo Art Co. in September
DESCRIPTION:Drawn to the ever-changing show-offs in her backyard garden and the beauty of the forest sentinels when they have shed their seasonal colors\, Dee McBrien-Lee was inspired to create these newest works in her series “Vertical Interlude”\, opening September 4\, from 4-7pm at Tumalo Art Co.\n“2020 has been a year fraught with chaos. No matter who you are\, current events have touched each and every one of us in some way. In trying to navigate through everything it was important to me to be able to set aside what was going on and find focus in the beauty and gifts that surround us\,” says Dee. “I wanted to create works that would bring joy\, perhaps solace and comfort to the viewer.” In doing so she decided to work in a more relatable style\, but not completely abandon\, her abstract leanings by looking for patterns in nature. Inspired by the simplicity and meditative quality of vertical line\, it became her focus.\nPreferring bold color and line combined with many layers to create the finished pieces Dee seeks to create a mood or draw a reaction with her work and strives to create a dialog amongst her viewers.\nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. www.tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

SUMMARY:New hand-blown glass by Nancy Becker for August
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Becker’s hand-blown glass in her August show at Tumalo Art Co. represents tuning into Central Oregon’s environment after a five-year stay in the Southern United States. ”Songs on the Wind” opens Friday\, August 7\, from 4-7pm following Covid-safe requirements. \n“I notice there are little songs being sung throughout the fabric of nature. So my pieces are about those songs. Is the song in the wind? What are we as individuals singing right now?” \nNancy’s palette for these new glass creations represent high desert color\, and many employ clear glass giving them luminous transparency. The spirals inherent in each glass shape is meant to communicate the revealing that occurs in nature\, each moment unique and unfolding. SUMMARY:Shelli Walters offers an artistic visit with nature in her May show\, Water Echo at Tumalo Art Co.
DESCRIPTION:In a time when we may be feeling especially isolated\, Shelli Walters’ show\, Water Echo is a vibrant visual connection to nature and the world around us. These new mixed media pieces explore the powerful energy and movement of water flowing through rivers\, lakes\, seas – and our souls.\n“While creating these paintings\, I thought about how water connects virtually everything. In all its forms — liquid\, vapor\, ice — water has the magical capacity to change as it flows through waterways\, earth\, sky\, animals\, trees and people. Water always finds a way. Perhaps that is why being near it makes us feel hopeful.” \nLayers and layers of thoughts\, stories\, experiences\, moods — shifting one over the other — sometimes revealing a hint of what is underneath. This has become Shelli’s signature voice and style. Alternating layers of acrylic paint and collage to create richly textured and colorful pieces that invite you to look closer and discover your own story.\nIn lieu of our traditional First Friday reception while we are under temporary Covid closure\, we invite you to enjoy the show online. SUMMARY:April Show at Tumalo Art Co.—Tracy Leagjeld & Susan Luckey Higdon
DESCRIPTION:Our April show at Tumalo Art Co. features Tracy Leagjeld and Susan Luckey Higdon\, two artists who are drawn to many of the same subjects and have a simpatico sensibility about color. First admiring each other’s art and then becoming friends\, they eventually partnered as owners of Tumalo Art Co. The idea of doing this show together came to them while camping and sketching in the high Cascades last autumn\, surrounded by lakes and meandering creeks. \nTumalo Art Co. is not having an opening reception for the April show\, but invites you to see the full show online at tumaloartco.com/april. Videos will help you see the art on the walls\, which is a work of art as well. \nTracy primarily spends her time doing monotypes on board\, but can also be seen painting small plein air studies all over the Northwest\, from coast\, to gorge to mountains. Many of these small paintings are later made into larger monotypes. Her distinctive style of creating her marks with printmaking rollers keeps her images loose\, energetic and colorful. \nSusan paints in acrylic on cradled board in an impressionistic style adding paint and wiping it off\, building up layers. Using composition to narrow and refine the view\, she focuses on pattern and color making many of her images feel semi-abstracted. “This approach to seeing nature has limitless possibilities\,” says Susan. \nTumalo Art Co. is currently closed to the public\, but we are available to help you with your art and gift needs. Email art@tumaloartco.com to make an appointment to see the show by Face Time or zoom. We look forward to seeing you in person in the near future!

SUMMARY:Marty Stewart March Show at Tumalo Art Co/
DESCRIPTION:The title of Marty Stewart’s March exhibit\, “Seeking Beauty”\, perfectly describes her new pastel paintings. The show opens March 6\, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co in the Old Mill District. \n“The beauty of the natural world has always been the central inspiration for my pastel landscapes” Marty says. “The landscape speaks to me of many things. Rivers speak of travel\, ancient trees and mountains of their strength and endurance. The ever-changing sky reminds us of impermanence. Open spaces of solitude…” Marty seeks to convey some of what she experiences through her senses of these aspects of the natural world\, through her pastels to the viewer.\nDuring her career as an artist Marty has received many awards\, often for the expressive abstraction of her pastel paintings. \nTumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District\, open 7 days a week. www.tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.
