Courtney Equall and her family moved to the Three Rivers Area about a year ago. Since then, she’s DIY’d almost every inch of their home. The result is a fun, warm house with bold color in every corner. Equall runs the home design blog girl & grey and posts daily updates on her Instagram. Here, she talks about her personal design philosophy, designing for kids and taking on big DIY projects.
Name: Courtney Equall
Job: Teacher by education but staying home with our kids for now
Neighborhood: Three Rivers/Sunriver
How long have you been in Bend?
We have lived here for a year and a half. But we are from Oregon and have been vacationing in Bend since we were kids.
Do you live with anyone?
My husband and our three young kids.
Do you live with any animals?
Yes, we have a funny cat who thinks she’s a dog.
How did you find your place?
We were living in Austin, Texas at the time and my husbands job started allowing him to work from home. So, we decided our goal was to move back to Oregon to be closer to both of our families. We found our house online and sent my parents to go and have a look at it. We bought the place without ever seeing it first! It was kind of terrifying but we knew we wanted to be in this neighborhood and the house is on the river—so we just went for it!
Describe your personal style.
I have an eclectic style for sure. Maybe eclectic but with boho and Scandinavian influences.
What do you like about your house?
I love the location! We are on the river so our kids swim and kayak all through the summer and they ski all winter. Mt Bachelor is only twenty-five minutes away! It’s the perfect spot for us.
What would you change?
We have a tricky floor plan and I think we are going to be opening up a wall soon which will allow us to have one open area for our living and dining spaces.
How do you like your neighborhood?
We love it! We have the best neighbors and since we have moved in, there have been young families moving in all around us. The kids are excited to have their classmates so close!
How did you personalize your space?
We have personalized just about every space in the house. Since we moved in, we painted every surface (including all the ceilings), remodeled the kitchen, installed wood floors upstairs and we are in the middle of remodeling a bathroom right now as part of the One Room Challenge. We are passionate about DIY and have done all the work ourselves. I have a blog where I document all the happenings and projects around the house.
Do you have a design philosophy?
Yes! Just go for it! You’ll never know if you like something if you don’t try it out! And…just because you tried something doesn’t mean you have to stay married to it forever. If you don’t love it, try something else until you DO love it!
How do you commute?
No commuting here! My husband works from home and I’m home with the kids. We are homebodies through and through.
Where do you shop for furniture and decor?
I’m kind of a mixed bag. I get my pieces from all over the place: thrift stores, garage sales, hand-me-downs from my mom and even big box stores. I like it this way, because I think it gives a space a more curated and collected feel.
How long do you plan on living here?
We don’t have a plan. We do love the house though and the neighborhood even more. I guess we’ll see when the house is all finished up…then I might be ready for another project.
What are some of the ways your turned your house into a home?
The house feels more and more like us all the time. And I think it’s because we are taking the time to take on all the projects, do the work ourselves, and really make this house into something we love! A labor of love!
