There are a lot of great events happening around town this weekend. Check out the Cowdeo, listen to a jazz legend, meet a renowned NASA scientist and taste some of the state’s best handcrafted spirits. There’s also the second annual Board Fair, where you can meet local nonprofits that are looking for new board members.

NASA Legend Norman Chaffee
October 17 | Worthy Brewing, Bend | Suggested $10 donation

Norman Chaffee, who spent more than fifty years working for NASA, will be at Worthy Brewing on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to talk about working in the Apollo space missions, the International Space Station and the early days of the Mars exploration. Students are encouraged to attend, and a portion of the donations will be given to the Summit High School robotics team.

Jazz at the Oxford
October 19-20 | The Oxford Hotel, Bend

If you’re a fan of the live jazz shows in Bend, hopefully you were able to get tickets to Lee Ritenour’s performances with Jazz at the Oxford this weekend. Ritenour is a Grammy-award winning guitarist with a forty-year career playing with some of the biggest names in jazz. If you didn’t get tickets, you can attend the free music education workshop that Ritenour is hosting on Saturday.

Cowdeo
October 20 | Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Madras | $5, Free for 4 years and under

This is the fiftieth anniversary of the Cowdeo, held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Madras. Kids ages 5 to 14 compete in rodeo competitions like sheep, calf and cow riding, goat tail undecorating, horseless calf roping, the chicken scramble and more. It’s a fun event for kids and families to watch.

High Desert Oregon Distillers Festival
October 20 | McMenamins Father Luke’s Room, Bend | 21 and over, $35 includes 10 tokens

There will be more than 100 handcrafted spirits at the High Desert Oregon Distillers Festival held at McMenamins this weekend. Oregon Distillers Guild members from around the state will bring out their best spirits for anyone 21 and over to taste. There will also be of specialty cocktails available and appetizers.

Volunteer Central Oregon Board Fair
October 22 | Deschutes Brewery Pub, Bend | Free

Twenty-five local nonprofit organizations that are seeking board members will be at Deschutes Brewery Pub on Monday evening. If you have been looking to volunteer with a local nonprofit, this is your chance to find the perfect match with your skills.
