La Pine BeaverHOOD planting with Think Wild
May 28 @ 9:00 am - May 29 @ 5:00 pm
Bench Leg Drive, Bench Leg Dr, Oregon, USA
This is two-day project to plant beaver habitat in La Pine State Park. Join us for one or both days.
Difficulty level: Easy/Medium
Itinerary: Volunteers are welcome to arrive on-site or carpool from Think Wild starting at 8 am. Planting will take place between 9AM and 5PM on Tuesday 5/28 and Wednesday, 5/29. Come one day or both! You have the opportunity to dry camp at the project site on Tuesday night, which should make for a unique and quite night under the waning gibbous moon.
Tasks will include: Digging in soft and rocky soils, planting sticks, installing fencing, pounding t-posts in the ground, hiking, carrying moderately heavy loads of supplies, shoveling dirt, mapping plants within each plot, and installing wildlife cameras.
What you’ll need: A positive attitude and hard work ethic; Plan to bring clothes and food to keep you comfortable throughout the day. There are no bathrooms on site, but plenty of places to find privacy.
About the location: The meandering section of the Deschutes River is a gorgeous piece of public land with significant wildlife viewing opportunities. This section of the Deschutes River maintains a distinctive place within the National System of Wild and Scenic Rivers. Established by Congress from 1975 to 1988 these rivers were selected for their outstandingly remarkable values such as recreational, wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values. Volunteers will be an essential part of this new project supporting sensitive wildlife, and discuss beaver, wildlife habitat, and riparian restoration.
Advance Training and Orientation: Please be sure to also signup for the April 14 Orientation and Training workshop if you plan to participate in this project.
We’ll need about 15 people for this project – so share this with your friends and make a fun trip out of it while helping to restore beaver habitat!
