“Stillness”, art inspired by natures deep hush, opens May 3, from 3-7pm at Tumalo Art Co. during the Old Mill Districts First Friday Gallery Walk. The exhibit combines the glowing transparency of Nancy Becker’s hand-blown glass with Susan Luckey Higdon’s poetic landscape paintings.
With a similar sensibility for color and a shared sense of awe for what is communicated by nature, glass artist Nancy Becker and painter Susan Luckey Higdon enjoy displaying their work together and seeing the energy it creates. Designing the gallery’s exhibit space with both 2D and 3D pieces leads to a stunning synchronicity as the artworks ‘speak’ to each other. Susan’s images come from time spent in the high Cascades painting plein air in the late autumn and Nancy’s fluid use of color and shape in her glass blowing is her response to living and working on her land.
Tumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

The subject of her work is broad, including landscapes, flowers and even an automobile.
What better way to study color than to concentrate on the 12 birthstones of the calendar? Helen will do just that in her May show. “I like the idea of examining color as a gem because each stone reflects many variations of its color through facets and light.” Painting on rice paper with a watercolor batik technique her strikingly detailed paintings have texture and clarity and regularly wins awards in juried watercolor exhibits.

For March, the artists in Tumalo Art Co. create art about the “Equilux” with a group exhibit opening March 3, from 3-7pm during the First Friday Gallery Walk in the Old Mill District.
Twice a year, day and night reach a perfect balance of 12 hours each, creating a little-known event called the Equilux. The Equilux happens just a few days before the much more well-known equinox, which happens March 20 this year. Equilux means “equal light” in Latin and describes when day and night are equal.
This is a compelling subject for artists who are often enthralled by that moment when day becomes night and the incredible light effects that are produced. Art in many mediums and sizes will describe the effect of light and dark on the land and objects in this exhibit.

Glass artist Nancy Becker and landscape painter Susan Luckey Higdon are combining their love of color and shape in “Dreaming of Water”, opening November 4 from 3-7pm, during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk.
Finding an affinity that resonates for both artists about the mystery and movement of water, Nancy and Susan have joined forces to create art in their respective mediums, in 2D and 3D for this November exhibit. Glass becomes liquid when heated, swirling with color that Nancy shapes with mastery and wizardry into vessels and vases. Susan is transfixed with the movement and color of water, capturing it’s many reflections and layers with paint and texture. Both artists have been working in their chosen mediums for over 30 years. They continue to challenge themselves to interpret nature in a way that connects emotionally, intuitively and joyfully with the viewer.

In the tradition of Turner and Cezanne, painter David Kreitzer’s love of nature, fantasy and the human form, propels him to create exquisitely detailed, mood-invoking landscapes, figures and striking still life floral studies in a variety of mediums. A full time artist for 58 years, David’s career began with sold out shows at Maxwell Gallery in San Francisco. David grew up as the son of a Lutheran minister who, due to his vocation, moved his family frequently throughout the Nebraska countryside. Kreitzers’ works are in the collections of Howard and Roberta Ahmanson, Hirschhorn Foundation, Revlon Corporation, Olga Corporation, Barnes-Hind Corporation, Sinclair Paints, Lloyd’s Bank, Cargill Corporation and the San Diego, Santa Barbara, Nebraska and Minnesota Museums. Private collectors include Ray Bradbury, Mary Tyler Moore, Michael Douglas, Pepe Romero, Quinn Martin, Raymond Burr and Robert and Linda Takken. “David Kreitzer…is a highly traditional figure painter who demonstrates how much poetic intensity the old tradition can still contain.” ~Thomas Albright, San Francisco Chronicle.
“Quiet Moments & Lively Interactions”, a retrospective by photographer and digital artist Dorothy Freudenberg, opens September 2, from 3-7pm, during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk. Juxtaposing introspective images with expressively vibrant digital compositions, Dorothy blends different artistic mediums by incorporating them all in her imagery. Her work transcends the graphic arts, suggesting that music, the written word, and the visual arts all overlap.

Printmaker Adell Shetterly, has followed her own artistic path as defined in ink. “P3 Press | Pull | Print”, opening July 1, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co., features original hand-pulled prints that investigate various printmaking processes and techniques.
Every print image is pressed onto paper, then pulled by hand with the impression transferred from the plate to paper to create a unique image. Adell Shetterly unlocks her imagination to the possibilities in print questioning, “what would happen IF?” She presents new work, rich and diverse in wealth of marks, color, layers and lines drawing on imagery, that range in style from abstract to deconstructed landscapes inspired by nature, memories and moments of daily life.

Art and Wine in the High Desert, an exciting fundraising event sponsored by the Sunriver Women’s Club, returns May 9 -14,2022. Tickets for the event are limited and are on sale now. Virtual wine pairing class and wine tastings must be purchased no later than April 28. Tickets for the live all-inclusive wine tasting and art expo, taking place on May 14 at SHARC in Sunriver, will be sold until the limit is reached. Concurrently, there is a virtual auction of art, wine, experiences, and more.
On Monday, May 9, the event kicks off with a virtual class about Unexpected Wine Pairings, sponsored by Bend’s Market of Choice.
Throughout the week of May 9 -13, there will be five virtual wine tastings to choose from, one each night: Maragas Winery (Central OR), Utopia Vineyard & Winery (Newberg, OR), Native Flora Winery (Dundee Hills), Domaine Roy et Fils (Dundee, OR), and Ken Wright Cellars (Carlton, OR). Wines are sent directly from the winery and a Zoom link connects attendees to the tasting.
New this year is a live wine and art expo on May 14 at the SHARC in Sunriver. Tastings are from carefully chosen wineries that represent different varieties of wine and growing regions: Abacela Winery, Anam Cara Cellars, Delfino Vineyards, Ken Wright Cellars, Lady Hill Vineyards, Lava Estate Winery, Left Coast Estate, Maragas Winery, Utopia Vineyard & Winery, and Willamette Valley Vineyards. A charcuterie item, a paella station, a dessert station, a glass of wine from a favorite winery and music by Wil Kinky are included in the ticket price.
And since art and wine pair well, artists from the Artists’ Gallery in Sunriver will be providing live demonstrations at the expo, creating an opportunity for a personal encounter with local artists who have created special pieces just for this event.

Dry Canyon Arts presents their Spring Art Show and Sale. Featuring local artists & artisans!
Spring is in the air and art for our March show, “Tweet”, opening March 4, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill Districts First Friday Gallery Walk. As the birds fill the air with their song our artists have turned their minds toward depicting their favorite winged ones.
From a watercolor on rice paper by Helen Brown of a peacock in full plumage, to linocuts of song birds by Adell Shetterly, majestic birds in the landscape by Judy Hoiness and Mollie Jurgenson and ravens by Shelli Walters and Janice Druian. A sweet birdie semi-abstracted with flowers by Dee McBrien-Lee and mixed media by Pamela Kroll. Many mediums, lots of perspectives. This is a joyous exhibit of our feathered friends to celebrate a new season.

Dee McBrien-Lee’s new series, “Tale of Two Deserts”, opens October 1, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Art Walk. Wines from VaPiano and Evoke with be served along with appetizers.
“Tale of Two Deserts” takes us from the high desert environment of Central Oregon to the red rock country of Southern Utah. Deeply in love with both places, Dee was inspired to create this series after a spring trip to the St. George area of Utah where she was struck by the vast differences of the places. Reflected in these works, which range from wide open spaces to intimate canyons and secret spots, are her feelings about the two deserts, represented in both abstract and a more traditional style.

“The Shape of Water”, fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson, opens August 6, at Tumalo Art Co. from 3-7 pm for the Old Mill District’s First Friday Art Walk. Jackson invites you to look below the surface and imagine the role water plays in shaping the subject matter of each photograph. Most of us relate to water as an essential element for survival, rarely considering how water has effects nearly everything we encounter in life. Join us in witnessing water in a whole new context.
Since his iconic photograph and subsequent sold-out poster of Mt. Bachelor over 25 years ago, Bruce’s finely tuned eye for the eloquence of nature, and patience in getting the perfect shot, has made him one of Oregon’s most loved photographers. From natures abstractions to the panoramic landscape in all of its majesty, he finds the precise moment to capture the essence of his subjects and has won numerous awards for his stunning photographs.

“Earth+Feather” features uplifting mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture by Shelli Walters, opening May 7, with an artists reception from 4-7pm. With an accent on birds, this new work emerges from Shelli’s love for the Earth and wild creatures. “Animals hold such wisdom and the landscape such mystery. I enjoy expressing this connection in my art and sharing the sense of oneness and wonder I find in nature.”
Shelli shares her love of the natural world, with layers upon layers of thoughts, stories, experiences, moods — shifting one over the other — sometimes revealing a hint of what is underneath. This has become Shelli’s signature voice and style. Alternating layers of acrylic paint and collage, creating richly textured and colorful pieces that invite you to look closer and discover your own story.

Rest. Breathe. Take in the quiet. Our artists interpret the theme, “A Still Moment”, for the March group show at Tumalo Art Co. exhibited from Friday, March 5 through the month.
Artists find stillness in their subjects, and use many genres to describe that feeling—still life, landscapes, figures, animals and more. Monoprints by Adell Shetterly, Danae Bennett-Miller’s bronze sculpture, landscapes in oil, soft pastel, watercolor and digital media.

David Kinker paints from his journeys on rivers throughout Oregon and the world. Rafting and kayaking wild waters brings him to hidden places only seen from the water, and inspires him to capture the essence of these rare places. “Hydro Logic”, opening Friday, October 2, from 4-7pm, brings together new images from David’s recent trips to many of his favorite rivers.
Painting plein-air on long river floats deep into scenic areas, David then goes to his studio and paints many of the images on larger canvases. He teaches art and creates murals, recently finishing a two-story, multi-wall, wrap-around scene of Central Oregon’s Cascade mountains in a private home. Working with unique exotic woods, David makes his own custom frames, giving his art an extra dimension of creativity.

Drawn to the ever-changing show-offs in her backyard garden and the beauty of the forest sentinels when they have shed their seasonal colors, Dee McBrien-Lee was inspired to create these newest works in her series “Vertical Interlude”, opening September 4, from 4-7pm at Tumalo Art Co.
“2020 has been a year fraught with chaos. No matter who you are, current events have touched each and every one of us in some way. In trying to navigate through everything it was important to me to be able to set aside what was going on and find focus in the beauty and gifts that surround us,” says Dee. “I wanted to create works that would bring joy, perhaps solace and comfort to the viewer.” In doing so she decided to work in a more relatable style, but not completely abandon, her abstract leanings by looking for patterns in nature. Inspired by the simplicity and meditative quality of vertical line, it became her focus.
Preferring bold color and line combined with many layers to create the finished pieces Dee seeks to create a mood or draw a reaction with her work and strives to create a dialog amongst her viewers.

Nancy Becker’s hand-blown glass in her August show at Tumalo Art Co. represents tuning into Central Oregon’s environment after a five-year stay in the Southern United States. ”Songs on the Wind” opens Friday, August 7, from 4-7pm following Covid-safe requirements.
“I notice there are little songs being sung throughout the fabric of nature. So my pieces are about those songs. Is the song in the wind? What are we as individuals singing right now?”
Nancy’s palette for these new glass creations represent high desert color, and many employ clear glass giving them luminous transparency. The spirals inherent in each glass shape is meant to communicate the revealing that occurs in nature, each moment unique and unfolding. Also included in the show will be several new pieces from her “Dance of the Flower Fairies” series

Danae Bennett-Miller’s exhibit, “Feathers & Fur”, opens June 5, from 4-7pm. The show includes a large sculpture of a deer, medium and small bird sculptures and new monoprints. All are one-of-a kind. Danae’s new work is about connecting with feelings past and present. “Animals have supported my emotional well being, and energized my artwork for 40 years.”
The impetus to create bird sculptures has come from Danae’s time in isolation on her ranch, where she observes the activities of birds and animals daily. “the birds symbolize freedom to me. They can fly wherever they want to and don’t know any borders. Their softness, color and movement inspire me to capture that feeling in bronze with iridescent patinas.”
Tumalo Art Co.’s June opening will follow the “new-normal” requirements—limiting the number of visitors in the gallery at one time, sanitizing often and requesting that everyone wear masks. Our first opening in over two months, we are excited to welcome our patrons back and are open in June regular hours, 10-7 Mon-Sat and 11-6 on Sun. tumaloartco.com; art@tumaloartco.com.
Our April show at Tumalo Art Co. features Tracy Leagjeld and Susan Luckey Higdon, two artists who are drawn to many of the same subjects and have a simpatico sensibility about color. First admiring each other’s art and then becoming friends, they eventually partnered as owners of Tumalo Art Co. The idea of doing this show together came to them while camping and sketching in the high Cascades last autumn, surrounded by lakes and meandering creeks.
Tumalo Art Co. is not having an opening reception for the April show, but invites you to see the full show online at tumaloartco.com/april. Videos will help you see the art on the walls, which is a work of art as well.
Tracy primarily spends her time doing monotypes on board, but can also be seen painting small plein air studies all over the Northwest, from coast, to gorge to mountains. Many of these small paintings are later made into larger monotypes. Her distinctive style of creating her marks with printmaking rollers keeps her images loose, energetic and colorful.
Susan paints in acrylic on cradled board in an impressionistic style adding paint and wiping it off, building up layers. Using composition to narrow and refine the view, she focuses on pattern and color making many of her images feel semi-abstracted. “This approach to seeing nature has limitless possibilities,” says Susan.
Tumalo Art Co. is currently closed to the public, but we are available to help you with your art and gift needs. Email art@tumaloartco.com to make an appointment to see the show by Face Time or zoom. We look forward to seeing you in person in the near future!

The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, (ASCAP) voted its score the best ever written for a Broadway musical.
GYPSY is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success… while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920’s and 30’s, when vaudeville was dying and Broadway was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark musical explores the true love of show business with brass, humor, heart, and a dream.
The celebrated score by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim boasts one glorious hit after hit, including: “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” and “You Gotta Get A Gimmick“.

The title of Marty Stewart’s March exhibit, “Seeking Beauty”, perfectly describes her new pastel paintings. The show opens March 6, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co in the Old Mill District.
“The beauty of the natural world has always been the central inspiration for my pastel landscapes” Marty says. “The landscape speaks to me of many things. Rivers speak of travel, ancient trees and mountains of their strength and endurance. The ever-changing sky reminds us of impermanence. Open spaces of solitude…” Marty seeks to convey some of what she experiences through her senses of these aspects of the natural world, through her pastels to the viewer.
During her career as an artist Marty has received many awards, often for the expressive abstraction of her pastel paintings.

Come for an evening of sharing your adventure stories with others in the outdoor community. Settle in to listen or get prepared to share your adventure stories in 10 minutes or less from 7-9 PM. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
You can’t shred gnar, bomb down trail, climb volcanoes, and run whitewater all the time. But at Boldly Went we know that when you’re not, you want to talk about your adventures with other people who get it – probably over beer. And every thru hiker, trail runner, mountain biker, climber, paddler, sailor, scuba diver, flyer, and Indiana Jones wannabe has at least one story that will inspire, inform, or at least entertain the rest of us, so we’re pulling together crowds of you and randomly selecting you to go on stage to give us your best.
How it works: Event format is casual and starts with a brief review of how to tell a good outdoor adventure story. Anyone interested in telling a story will be encouraged to complete the storyteller sign up sheet throughout the evening. Of those signed up, names are drawn at random. Selected individuals are given 10 minutes to tell their adventure story.
Storytellers are judged by select audience members using criteria described in detail on the Boldly Went website. A winner is announced at the end of the evening. Stories are recorded and may be shared later in the weekly podcast.
Everyone is welcome to attend and no one will be required or pressured to tell a story.
See the Boldly Went website for more details about what to expect at the event and tips for preparing your 10 minute story if you think you have one to share.

Tumalo Art Co. features new fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson in September focusing on “The Language of Trees”. The show opens during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk September 6, from 4-8pm.
Exquisitely composed, zen-like images of Central Oregon and beyond, are Jackson’s hallmark. His iconic photos titled, “The Summit-Mt. Bachelor” and “Pine Marten-Mt. Bachelor”, reproduced as open edition prints, have become collectors items. A Sierra Club Photography Competition Grand Prize winner, Jackson defines his photographic process as moving meditation.
“With each season, deciduous trees express a multitude of unique personalities, and once again remind me why I love photographing them”, says Jackson. “Vulnerable bare shapes revealed in winter, speak to the strength at their core. As spring arrives, trees offer up shockingly vibrant greens, stating their ability to thrive through adversity. As temperatures rise and leaves settle into deeper shades of green, they seem to be saying;’rest your eyes, the real show is yet to come.’ Fall arrives, and trees shift from summer slumber, to all out riotous expression. Having shed their coats of gold, the cycle begins anew.”

“Déjà Vu: Reinterpreting the Oregon Landscape Through an Altered Lens”, new works in oil by Katherine Taylor opens August 2, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co. in the Old Mill District.
For this show Katherine was inspired to create art commemorating some of the places she hiked and camped during the first year she moved to Central Oregon in 1996. Coming from dry New Mexico desert country, she was blown away by the many beautiful snow-capped mountains, sparkling lakes and emerald pine trees found here. “Recently I came across an old backpack that still had a journal I kept whenever I hiked to a new Oregon landmark. For this show, I decided to read a random entry, then paint an image reflecting the excitement and wonder my words described about the beauty I was witnessing,” she explains.
The altered lens in this case represents the nuance, the nostalgia, the growth and experience that Katherine has amassed since that first year she laid eyes on Central Oregon twenty-three years ago.
Working exclusively in oils, Katherine’s artwork employs the dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and lustrous glazing she learned from her classical art training in the 1990s. Her inexhaustible desire to excel in oils has taken her into the studios of many contemporary masters to study a variety of creative methods; each technique learned has continued to inform her painting style, which some have described as “soulful and luminous.”

“Colors of the Spirit”, a semi-abstract collection of landscape paintings in mixed media, reflecting Sarah B Hansen’s interpretation of the West Coast, opens June 7, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co.
Instead of painting exactly what she sees, Sarah paints how she feels. Each landscape painting has a dominant color, and that color has it’s own meaning within the piece. For instance, yellow is the dominant color in Balance (shown here) and signifies both balance and clarity. A hallmark of Sarah’s work is her use of unique marks, including hand-writing, and layers of texture from other materials.
Sarah will also be introducing her series of paintings featuring birds that are part of a bird life list she began in 1979. She has committed to painting one bird per week and says, “I will only be painting birds on that list, which will also include recent additions from Costa Rica and Italy where I have recently hosted painting workshops.”
