We We Rock You: School Edition

See a play! Come support the performing arts community of Bend and Central Oregon!

Running from April 12-21, get tickets through our website linked here.

WE WILL ROCK YOU tells the story of a globalized future without musical instruments. A handful of rock rebels, the Bohemians, fight against the all-powerful Globalsoft company and its boss, the Killer Queen; they fight for freedom, individuality and the rebirth of the age of rock. Scaramouche and Galileo, two young outsiders, cannot come to terms with the bleak conformist reality. They join the Bohemians and embark on the search to find the unlimited power of freedom, love and Rock!

The idea for the musical came after a meeting between the actor Robert De Niro with musicians Brian May and Roger Taylor, in Venice in 1996. De Niro’s daughter was a big fan of the Queen and the actor asked if the legends of rock had never thought of creating a musical based on their songs. That was the beginning of everything.

Since 2002 over 15 million theatre goers in 17 countries have been thrilled by this awe-inspiring production which is based on the songs of Queen with a book by Ben Elton (The Young Ones, Blackadder, Popcorn). Elton fashioned this hilarious futurist comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and of course, We Will Rock You.

Nurturing arts & togetherness among artists & all who visit & reside in Sisters, Oregon

“Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination” digital media by Dorothy Freudenberg

Dorothy Freudenberg’s September exhibit, “Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination”, opening September 1, from 3-7pm during the Old Mill District’s First Friday Gallery Walk, features digital media exploding with color and nuance.

When Dorothy Freudenberg arrived in Bend many years ago, her garden became the focal point of her burgeoning photography experiences. Eventually she expanded the concept interpreting the whole planet as a huge, interconnected garden—one that supports all of life. From using only the camera lens to create images, she moved into exploring digital media which lends itself particularly well to the development of metaphorical creations that have their basis in the real world, but then transcend the literal. On her almost daily early morning walks (often in the Old Mill District, along the river paths) Dorothy photographs nature as it is, creating stunning ethereal images of patterns and textures of flora and fauna often overlooked as mundane. Then, taking bits and pieces from all of these photographs, she creates images digitally that have their basis in the real world, but become pure emotion and imagination.

“While I love to photograph nature as it is, I also cannot limit my imagination to simply accept this as the final means of expression. Nature is the inspiration, the mind is the means to embellish and find sublime pleasure in the imagination’s play.”

Tumalo Art Co. is an artist-run gallery in the heart of the Old Mill District open 7 days a week. tumaloartco.com; 541-385-9144.

Sun Garden—new mixed media paintings from Shelli Walters

Tumalo Art Company’s August exhibit, Sun Garden, features new mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture by Shelli Walters. The opening reception takes place August 4, during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 3-7pm in the Old Mill District.

Visitors to the gallery in August will be treated to an uplifting stroll through whimsical imagined gardens in Shelli’s Sun Garden series. Shelli says this body of work flowed out over the past year in response to the loss of her Mom. Her grief and a complex estate management process had her craving moments of peace and simplicity.

In the studio her garden experience spills out in acrylic paint, collage, graphite and crayon on 24”x12” canvas panels creating mural-like impression of a blissful day in the garden. Paper mache sculptures of deer and birds on bicycles, complement the two-dimensional work. Shelli enjoys repurposing materials to forge these whimsical creations giving what would otherwise end up in the trash or recycle bin a joyful new place in the world.

Contemporary Realist Artist David Kreitzer Open Studio and Gallery

In the tradition of Turner and Cezanne, painter David Kreitzer’s love of nature, fantasy and the human form, propels him to create exquisitely detailed, mood-invoking landscapes, figures and striking still life floral studies in a variety of mediums. A full time artist for 58 years, David’s career began with sold out shows at Maxwell Gallery in San Francisco. David grew up as the son of a Lutheran minister who, due to his vocation, moved his family frequently throughout the Nebraska countryside. Kreitzers’ works are in the collections of Howard and Roberta Ahmanson, Hirschhorn Foundation, Revlon Corporation, Olga Corporation, Barnes-Hind Corporation, Sinclair Paints, Lloyd’s Bank, Cargill Corporation and the San Diego, Santa Barbara, Nebraska and Minnesota Museums. Private collectors include Ray Bradbury, Mary Tyler Moore, Michael Douglas, Pepe Romero, Quinn Martin, Raymond Burr and Robert and Linda Takken. “David Kreitzer…is a highly traditional figure painter who demonstrates how much poetic intensity the old tradition can still contain.” ~Thomas Albright, San Francisco Chronicle.

June Exhibit—Journeys in Nature, art by Sarah B Hansen

Our June show, “Journeys in Nature, An Artist’s Exploration of Pacific NW Trails”, presents contemporary landscape artist Sarah B Hansen’s latest exploration into her decades-long Northwest hiking journeys. Meet the artist Friday June 4, from 4-7pm.

Inspired by her Pacific Northwest hikes, and witnessing the increasing challenges of human impact on wilderness areas, Hansen has created this selection of mixed media paintings focusing both on what it means to experience the unaffected wilderness, and how our presence in those spaces alters its habitat. Working on cradled boards with water media, collaged textures and handwriting, Hansen creates art that leaves much to the imagination and gives a strong feeling of place. Many of her pieces are large, capturing the monumental space in the landscape. Her mantra is, “save wild spaces, pick up your refuse, tread lightly, and speak quietly”.

May Exhibit at Tumalo Art Co.—”Earth+Feather” by Shelli Walters

“Earth+Feather” features uplifting mixed media paintings and paper mache sculpture by Shelli Walters, opening May 7, with an artists reception from 4-7pm. With an accent on birds, this new work emerges from Shelli’s love for the Earth and wild creatures. “Animals hold such wisdom and the landscape such mystery. I enjoy expressing this connection in my art and sharing the sense of oneness and wonder I find in nature.”

Shelli shares her love of the natural world, with layers upon layers of thoughts, stories, experiences, moods — shifting one over the other — sometimes revealing a hint of what is underneath. This has become Shelli’s signature voice and style. Alternating layers of acrylic paint and collage, creating richly textured and colorful pieces that invite you to look closer and discover your own story.

Printmaker Adell Shetterly with “Impressions” in November

Printmaker Adell Shetterly’s exhibit of hand-pulled prints, “Impressions”, opens at Tumalo Art Co. November 6, from 4-7pm. The show highlights a variety of print processes from monotype, monoprint, collagraph and combinations of print forms and media. From memories and moments in time, Adell’s images integrate abstraction, withcolor and texture inspired by natural environs.

Much like the first impressions we make on others upon a first meeting, the first impressions made from a plate as it contacts a sheet of paper pulled through a press deeply influence the direction of the printmaker. Each print technique creates unique effects that cannot be created by any other means.

“Many of my works are inspired by encounters with nature and recorded with photography to be brought forth at a later date to explore the question, ‘What if’? What if I focus on just this piece in the photo? What if I quiet my mind and remember the sense of place or feeling from this photo?”, explains Adell. “I am fascinated by printmaking as an art form; there are so many permutations. Design possibilities, techniques and variations in each technique provide hours of creative exploration. Every new work reinforces what I do know and it also instigates excitement for what comes next. Printmaking is innovative, creative and wide open to interpretation. It has its own lexicon and l hope, lasting impressions.”

Totem Power—Katherine Taylor’s oils open July 3

“Totem Power”, a collection of paintings honoring Katherine Taylor’s totem power animals, opens July 3 from 4-7pm, at Tumalo Art Co. in the heart of the Old Mill District.

The Native American term “totem” means a sacred being or object, often symbolized by an animal that is used to guide an individual. Animals that repeatedly show up in a person’s dreams or real-life interactions offer that individual wisdom qualities that are unique to that creature.

The choice of the “totem” theme for Katherine’s July show turned out to be serendipitous as a global pandemic unfolded throughout the world . “As I painted each animal over these last three months, I drew on the powerful spirit qualities of them to help me cope.” For instance, the totem quality of a lion is said to be courage and strength. The lamb, innocence and forgiveness. A butterfly, grace and the ability to accept change. Each painting became a calming emblem for Katherine as she created it.

November Show at Tumalo Art Co. features Helen Brown

“Pixels to Pigments”, Helen Brown’s November show at Tumalo Art Co. features watercolors illustrating how one artist interprets the vision of another artist—a photographer. The show opens during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk, November 1, from 4-8pm.

Asking her collectors, friends and family to submit their favorite photos to her to serve as reference for her watercolors, she received over 150 photos from 55 of them. Says Brown, “I was overwhelmed, but excited to choose and get started painting!” Unlike commission work, the photographers are not obligated to purchase the work, just to come and observe her interpretations. “I thought it would be fun to involve other people in the process,” she explained.

She will show up to 15 watercolors depicting landscape, animals, figures and still life. In one painting, she combined two photos into the same scene. “I’m not sure all the photographers will even recognize their photo in my paintings, as I like to change the color scheme and composition to suit my eye.”

New mixed media pieces by Shelli Walters celebrate “Wings” as a symbol of strength, purpose and freedom, opening May 3, at Tumalo Art Co. during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 4-8pm.

Drawn to bold color Shelli works with layers upon layers of paint and collage that add depth and texture inviting the viewer to look more closely. A graphic designer by trade she loves to use torn up printed materials in her work. This show celebrates taking a “leap of faith” a year ago by leaving her ad agency career of 24 years to surrender to the mystery of her creative path and pursue art and design with autonomy. In the year leading up to her departure her connection to Nature and its guidance became an undeniable and powerful force. “Birds appeared as messengers—time to trust my wings and synchronicity. These birds reappear here in my work. Each taking their perfect, harmonious place within the earth and sky.”

April Show at Tumalo Art Co. features David Kinker Grand Canyon Series

Seeking inspiration during a gray, landlocked winter, David Kinker revisited his collection of Grand Canyon plein air paintings and his own photographic explorations, and discovered some gems yet to be fully explored. His April show, “Painting Paradise”, opening April 5, from 4-8pm during the First Friday Gallery Walk, is a pictorial, mark-making, colorful expression of a place where the scale and vistas, shapes and colors are a holy grail for artists.

“It is one thing to look down upon the canyon and glimpse a bit of the water below,
and quite another as a river runner at river level, to feel the grandeur of this painted paradise”, muses David. This show embodies his perceptions of a month-long journey on the Colorado River that few people have the chance to experience.
