On St. Patrick’s Day many drink Irish stouts. On Halloween, some of us drink pumpkin beers. So celebrate Arbor Day by coming to The Ale Apothecary to try over a dozen different TREE BEERS. Yes, beers made with ingredients foraged from West Coast forests and beyond, ingredients such as spruce tips, fir tips, juniper berries, bark, lichen, and even tree-dwelling mushrooms.
It’s worth noting that Bend’s only all-wild brewery, The Ale Apothecary, originated with a Sahati-style ale, native to Finland, brewed in a hand-hollowed Sitka Spruce tree from the Skyline Forest where the brewery remains. People who purchase the VITree package will be shuttled, courtesy of Cog Wild, from the Century Blvd. tasting room to the private brewery for tours and samples of vintage tree beers.
Purchase a ticket for either session, 12 – 3pm or 4 – 7pm, and you’ll be welcomed at the Apoth tasting room with your first three pours of tree beers included. There will be over a dozen tree beers including many from like-minded breweries from around Oregon, up and down the Pacific Coast, and clear across to the Eastern shore. These include our friends at Alesong (Eugene), De Garde (Tillamook), Upright (Portland), Block 15 (Corvallis) & Fort George (Astoria), Wolf Tree (Seal Rock), McMenamins Thompson Brewery (Salem), Jester King (Austin, TX), Propolis (Port Townsend, WA), Fruition (Watsonville, CA), Scratch Brewing (Ava, IL) and Wunderkammer Biermanufaktur (Wolcott, VT)
Packages of 4 drink tickets for $10 will be available. Paid admission also includes a souvenir coaster made from branches. There will be a food truck on site and a la carte axe-throwing courtesy of Unofficial Logging Co., Bend’s only hatchet-throwing bar.

Art and Wine in the High Desert, an exciting fundraising event sponsored by the Sunriver Women’s Club, returns May 9 -14,2022. Tickets for the event are limited and are on sale now. Virtual wine pairing class and wine tastings must be purchased no later than April 28. Tickets for the live all-inclusive wine tasting and art expo, taking place on May 14 at SHARC in Sunriver, will be sold until the limit is reached. Concurrently, there is a virtual auction of art, wine, experiences, and more.
On Monday, May 9, the event kicks off with a virtual class about Unexpected Wine Pairings, sponsored by Bend’s Market of Choice.
Throughout the week of May 9 -13, there will be five virtual wine tastings to choose from, one each night: Maragas Winery (Central OR), Utopia Vineyard & Winery (Newberg, OR), Native Flora Winery (Dundee Hills), Domaine Roy et Fils (Dundee, OR), and Ken Wright Cellars (Carlton, OR). Wines are sent directly from the winery and a Zoom link connects attendees to the tasting.
New this year is a live wine and art expo on May 14 at the SHARC in Sunriver. Tastings are from carefully chosen wineries that represent different varieties of wine and growing regions: Abacela Winery, Anam Cara Cellars, Delfino Vineyards, Ken Wright Cellars, Lady Hill Vineyards, Lava Estate Winery, Left Coast Estate, Maragas Winery, Utopia Vineyard & Winery, and Willamette Valley Vineyards. A charcuterie item, a paella station, a dessert station, a glass of wine from a favorite winery and music by Wil Kinky are included in the ticket price.
And since art and wine pair well, artists from the Artists’ Gallery in Sunriver will be providing live demonstrations at the expo, creating an opportunity for a personal encounter with local artists who have created special pieces just for this event.

Over 40 years of wine making has taught Ken a simple truth: source is everything. Located, in rural Carlton, Oregon, Ken Wright Cellars is devoted to producing wine that showcase the inherent quality of world class vineyard sites. With a clarity and breadth that is unequaled, Pinot noir is the ultimate vehicle for conveying the aroma, flavor and texture of the location in which it is grown.
In 1986, with family, belongings and 10 barrels in tow, Ken moved to McMinnville and started Panther Creek Cellars. His concept of focusing on vineyard-designate bottling began during those years at Panther Creek and this was cemented as a core philosophy in 1994 when Ken Wright Cellars was founded. Ken Wright Cellars now produces a single vineyard Pinot Noir from 13 different vineyard sites in the Northern Willamette Valley.
Our approach to the craft of wine growing is one of stewardship rather than manipulation. We use organic certified practices as a base and expand upon that with advanced nutrition-based farming. By analyzing both our soil profile and vines, maintaining proper crop levels, personally sampling each vineyard, and hand-sorting each cluster, we ensure that the inherent character in the fruit is revealed in the finished wine. Minimal handling of wine is essential to preserve what it is; a gift of nature.

Small production, sustainably farmed wines that represent the unique characteristics of our vineyards. As a grower and wine producer since 1999 in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, our handcrafted wines begin in the vineyards we own and farm. We emphasize low yields and careful hands-on management of the vines to produce wines that express the unique characteristics of our vineyard sites, including our older vines planted in the early 1970s.

Scott Steingraber, Owner & Winemaker and Nora Lancaster, Wine Director of Kriselle Cellars will guide you on a tasting through 3 of their award winning wines.
Kriselle Cellars is a unique winery located in the heart of southern Oregon’s scenic Rogue Valley. Currently, Kriselle Cellars produces approximately 4,000 cases of Oregon red and white varietals from grapes grown on our Estate vineyard, as well as purchased from other local vineyards.
Handcrafting elegant wines that showcase the unique character and fine quality of the Rogue Valley. The Kriselle Cellars Estate vineyard is home to the approximately 25 planted acres of grape. Our family vineyard is situated next to the beautiful Rogue River on a very unique site. Our grapes grow on a south-facing slope that is located between the Upper Table Rock Plateau and the Rogue River in southern Oregon.
Tasting Set Includes:
2019 Sauvignon Blanc
Snappy notes of fresh lime, grapefruit are abundant in the welcoming aromas of Kriselle Cellars 2019 Sauvignon Blanc. Discover flavors of passionfruit, lychee and pineapple among the spectrum of flavors within. While bright with acidity and refreshing, our Sauvignon Blanc will reward you with slight palate weight and a hint of creaminess that offers unexpected complexity. Excellent when paired with scallops, prawns and oysters. Delightful with recipes that include fresh herbs or light vinaigrette. GOLD medal, Savor NW Wine Awards
2016 Di’tani
Scarlet in color, inviting aromas and balanced composition: Di’tani is a great example of wine blending. Cabernet Franc provides structure and earthiness, Cabernet Sauvignon delivers fresh berry fruit, Malbec enriches the captivating coloration, Merlot introduces plush softness, and the hint of spice is all tempranillo. Together they create a singular expression of a wine rich with flavors and characteristics of the Rogue Valley Appelation. Di’tani is an incredible reflections of the soil and weather conditions of its orgin and reflects the “terrior” of this area. We find notes of huckleberries, purple plums, graphite, and and vanilla engaging with integrated tannins, and bright acidity. Exciting today, built for tomorrow, this wine is even more compelling as it opens in the glass or decanter. GOLD medal, Savor San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
2016 Tempranillo
Tempranillo is quickly becoming a favored grape in Southern Oregon. Aged 22 months in Oak barrels and provided months of bottle aging – We know you will enjoy this gorgeous rich red. Medium-plus, smooth tannins and balanced acidity create a fuller-styled and robust wine with rich notes of blackberry, mocha, and savory herbs. Warmth of smoked meat flavors and toast meet the black fruit notes of ripe plum and black cherries. GOLD medal, Savor NW Wine Awards

Tasting Set Includes:
2018 Estate Chardonnay
This classic “Willamette Valley style” Chardonnay is sourced from our three Estate vineyards — the original planting by Founder Jim Bernau in the Salem Hills, Tualatin Estate planted by Oregon wine pioneer Bill Fuller in the foothills of the Coastal Range and Elton planted by Dick and Betty O’Brien in the Eola-Amity Hills. 90 points – Wine Enthusiast
2017 Bernau Block Pinot Noir
Sourced exlusively from 15 acres of Pinot Noir from the first plantings at the Estate Vineyard, Founder Jim Bernau planted these vines using a Christmas tree planter pulled behind his 33 horsepower tractor. He grafted the French clones 667 and 777 on a portion of the vines wihen they became available. 91 points – Wine Enthusiast
2018 Pere Ami Red Blend
Founder Jim Bernau’s father, Fred Bernau, helped reestablish Oregon’s wine industry in the early 1960s when he assisted Richard Sommer of HillCrest Vineyard in getting one of the first winery licenses post-prohibition. Jim was 10 years old at the time, so he and his brother Jerry were allowed small tastes of Richard Sommer’s wines at the dinner table. From those small tastes, Jim’s passion for Oregon wine grew. It has always been a dream of his to make a wine dedicated to his father, the help he provided to early Oregon wine pioneers and the passion he ignited in Jim. Père Ami, translated to “Father Friend,” is just that.
