Hydro Logic—New Paintings about Water by David Kinker

David Kinker paints from his journeys on rivers throughout Oregon and the world. Rafting and kayaking wild waters brings him to hidden places only seen from the water, and inspires him to capture the essence of these rare places. “Hydro Logic”, opening Friday, October 2, from 4-7pm, brings together new images from David’s recent trips to many of his favorite rivers.

Painting plein-air on long river floats deep into scenic areas, David then goes to his studio and paints many of the images on larger canvases. He teaches art and creates murals, recently finishing a two-story, multi-wall, wrap-around scene of Central Oregon’s Cascade mountains in a private home. Working with unique exotic woods, David makes his own custom frames, giving his art an extra dimension of creativity.

Dee McBrien-Lee, presents “Vertical Interlude” at Tumalo Art Co. in September

Drawn to the ever-changing show-offs in her backyard garden and the beauty of the forest sentinels when they have shed their seasonal colors, Dee McBrien-Lee was inspired to create these newest works in her series “Vertical Interlude”, opening September 4, from 4-7pm at Tumalo Art Co.
“2020 has been a year fraught with chaos. No matter who you are, current events have touched each and every one of us in some way. In trying to navigate through everything it was important to me to be able to set aside what was going on and find focus in the beauty and gifts that surround us,” says Dee. “I wanted to create works that would bring joy, perhaps solace and comfort to the viewer.” In doing so she decided to work in a more relatable style, but not completely abandon, her abstract leanings by looking for patterns in nature. Inspired by the simplicity and meditative quality of vertical line, it became her focus.
Preferring bold color and line combined with many layers to create the finished pieces Dee seeks to create a mood or draw a reaction with her work and strives to create a dialog amongst her viewers.

New hand-blown glass by Nancy Becker for August

Nancy Becker’s hand-blown glass in her August show at Tumalo Art Co. represents tuning into Central Oregon’s environment after a five-year stay in the Southern United States. ”Songs on the Wind” opens Friday, August 7, from 4-7pm following Covid-safe requirements.

“I notice there are little songs being sung throughout the fabric of nature. So my pieces are about those songs. Is the song in the wind? What are we as individuals singing right now?”

Nancy’s palette for these new glass creations represent high desert color, and many employ clear glass giving them luminous transparency. The spirals inherent in each glass shape is meant to communicate the revealing that occurs in nature, each moment unique and unfolding. Also included in the show will be several new pieces from her “Dance of the Flower Fairies” series

June Show at Tumalo Art Co.—Danae Bennett-Miller, sculpture and original prints

Danae Bennett-Miller’s exhibit, “Feathers & Fur”, opens June 5, from 4-7pm. The show includes a large sculpture of a deer, medium and small bird sculptures and new monoprints. All are one-of-a kind. Danae’s new work is about connecting with feelings past and present. “Animals have supported my emotional well being, and energized my artwork for 40 years.”

The impetus to create bird sculptures has come from Danae’s time in isolation on her ranch, where she observes the activities of birds and animals daily. “the birds symbolize freedom to me. They can fly wherever they want to and don’t know any borders. Their softness, color and movement inspire me to capture that feeling in bronze with iridescent patinas.”

Tumalo Art Co.’s June opening will follow the “new-normal” requirements—limiting the number of visitors in the gallery at one time, sanitizing often and requesting that everyone wear masks. Our first opening in over two months, we are excited to welcome our patrons back and are open in June regular hours, 10-7 Mon-Sat and 11-6 on Sun. tumaloartco.com; art@tumaloartco.com.

April Show at Tumalo Art Co.—Tracy Leagjeld & Susan Luckey Higdon

Our April show at Tumalo Art Co. features Tracy Leagjeld and Susan Luckey Higdon, two artists who are drawn to many of the same subjects and have a simpatico sensibility about color. First admiring each other’s art and then becoming friends, they eventually partnered as owners of Tumalo Art Co. The idea of doing this show together came to them while camping and sketching in the high Cascades last autumn, surrounded by lakes and meandering creeks.

Tumalo Art Co. is not having an opening reception for the April show, but invites you to see the full show online at tumaloartco.com/april. Videos will help you see the art on the walls, which is a work of art as well.

Tracy primarily spends her time doing monotypes on board, but can also be seen painting small plein air studies all over the Northwest, from coast, to gorge to mountains. Many of these small paintings are later made into larger monotypes. Her distinctive style of creating her marks with printmaking rollers keeps her images loose, energetic and colorful.

Susan paints in acrylic on cradled board in an impressionistic style adding paint and wiping it off, building up layers. Using composition to narrow and refine the view, she focuses on pattern and color making many of her images feel semi-abstracted. “This approach to seeing nature has limitless possibilities,” says Susan.

Tumalo Art Co. is currently closed to the public, but we are available to help you with your art and gift needs. Email art@tumaloartco.com to make an appointment to see the show by Face Time or zoom. We look forward to seeing you in person in the near future!

Marty Stewart March Show at Tumalo Art Co/

The title of Marty Stewart’s March exhibit, “Seeking Beauty”, perfectly describes her new pastel paintings. The show opens March 6, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co in the Old Mill District.

“The beauty of the natural world has always been the central inspiration for my pastel landscapes” Marty says. “The landscape speaks to me of many things. Rivers speak of travel, ancient trees and mountains of their strength and endurance. The ever-changing sky reminds us of impermanence. Open spaces of solitude…” Marty seeks to convey some of what she experiences through her senses of these aspects of the natural world, through her pastels to the viewer.
During her career as an artist Marty has received many awards, often for the expressive abstraction of her pastel paintings.

Featured Artist in September at Tumalo Art Co.—Bruce Jackson

Tumalo Art Co. features new fine art photographs by Bruce Jackson in September focusing on “The Language of Trees”. The show opens during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk September 6, from 4-8pm.

Exquisitely composed, zen-like images of Central Oregon and beyond, are Jackson’s hallmark. His iconic photos titled, “The Summit-Mt. Bachelor” and “Pine Marten-Mt. Bachelor”, reproduced as open edition prints, have become collectors items. A Sierra Club Photography Competition Grand Prize winner, Jackson defines his photographic process as moving meditation.

“With each season, deciduous trees express a multitude of unique personalities, and once again remind me why I love photographing them”, says Jackson. “Vulnerable bare shapes revealed in winter, speak to the strength at their core. As spring arrives, trees offer up shockingly vibrant greens, stating their ability to thrive through adversity. As temperatures rise and leaves settle into deeper shades of green, they seem to be saying;’rest your eyes, the real show is yet to come.’ Fall arrives, and trees shift from summer slumber, to all out riotous expression. Having shed their coats of gold, the cycle begins anew.”

Katherine Taylor Opens August Show at Tumalo Art Co.

“Déjà Vu: Reinterpreting the Oregon Landscape Through an Altered Lens”, new works in oil by Katherine Taylor opens August 2, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co. in the Old Mill District.

For this show Katherine was inspired to create art commemorating some of the places she hiked and camped during the first year she moved to Central Oregon in 1996. Coming from dry New Mexico desert country, she was blown away by the many beautiful snow-capped mountains, sparkling lakes and emerald pine trees found here. “Recently I came across an old backpack that still had a journal I kept whenever I hiked to a new Oregon landmark. For this show, I decided to read a random entry, then paint an image reflecting the excitement and wonder my words described about the beauty I was witnessing,” she explains.

The altered lens in this case represents the nuance, the nostalgia, the growth and experience that Katherine has amassed since that first year she laid eyes on Central Oregon twenty-three years ago.

Working exclusively in oils, Katherine’s artwork employs the dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and lustrous glazing she learned from her classical art training in the 1990s. Her inexhaustible desire to excel in oils has taken her into the studios of many contemporary masters to study a variety of creative methods; each technique learned has continued to inform her painting style, which some have described as “soulful and luminous.”

June show at Tumalo Art Co. features Sarah B Hansen

“Colors of the Spirit”, a semi-abstract collection of landscape paintings in mixed media, reflecting Sarah B Hansen’s interpretation of the West Coast, opens June 7, from 4-8pm during Bend’s First Friday Gallery Walk at Tumalo Art Co.

Instead of painting exactly what she sees, Sarah paints how she feels. Each landscape painting has a dominant color, and that color has it’s own meaning within the piece. For instance, yellow is the dominant color in Balance (shown here) and signifies both balance and clarity. A hallmark of Sarah’s work is her use of unique marks, including hand-writing, and layers of texture from other materials.

Sarah will also be introducing her series of paintings featuring birds that are part of a bird life list she began in 1979. She has committed to painting one bird per week and says, “I will only be painting birds on that list, which will also include recent additions from Costa Rica and Italy where I have recently hosted painting workshops.”

Tumalo Art Co. featured artist for May—Shelli Walters “Wings”

New mixed media pieces by Shelli Walters celebrate “Wings” as a symbol of strength, purpose and freedom, opening May 3, at Tumalo Art Co. during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 4-8pm.

Drawn to bold color Shelli works with layers upon layers of paint and collage that add depth and texture inviting the viewer to look more closely. A graphic designer by trade she loves to use torn up printed materials in her work. This show celebrates taking a “leap of faith” a year ago by leaving her ad agency career of 24 years to surrender to the mystery of her creative path and pursue art and design with autonomy. In the year leading up to her departure her connection to Nature and its guidance became an undeniable and powerful force. “Birds appeared as messengers—time to trust my wings and synchronicity. These birds reappear here in my work. Each taking their perfect, harmonious place within the earth and sky.”

Exciting and motivating the arts community and promoting arts education are central to the mission of the High Desert Mural Festival, taking place October 2-9 as part of the Tenth Month suite of events in Bend. The grassroots festival’s organizers hope to use this inaugural building year as the first step toward creating a world-class, large format arts festival.

“In this mountain town category, like in Aspen, there is potential to support and sustain the arts,” said Douglas Robertson, founder and executive director of the festival.

The mural festival’s board is currently waiting for city approval on a sign code adjustment in the Makers District in Bend. There they hope to create murals that will be redesigned annually by large format artists in collaboration with students from the local school district.

“Murals, by nature, are transitory art,” said festival board member Kara Cronin. “The large format of murals brings diversity and scale to arts education.”
