Rooftop Bar in Redmond Offers a Breathtaking View and Sustainable Dining Experience

Local Cuisine and 360-Degree Views

Set against the panoramic backdrop of the Cascade Range, The Rooftop in Redmond makes you wonder why there aren’t more rooftop bars in Central Oregon. The space atop the SCP Redmond Hotel dazzles with atmosphere, local cuisine and inspired ethos.

Watermelon plated with extras

Spanning 1,500 square feet, the flex indoor and outdoor space provides guests with intimate seating amidst native gardens with vistas of the Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, Black Butte and Smith Rock State Park.

According to Tobias Colvin, SCP Redmond’s general manager, “This is the place to visit for amazing sunsets, cuddly couches, glowing fireplaces and perfectly executed after-dinner drinks and desserts—ideal for romantic date nights or aprés-adventure storytelling.”

The menu reflects SCP’s core values of sustainability, community and wellness. Joseph Ortiz, the executive chef at The Rooftop explained, “The menu is influenced by blue zones and Mediterranean-style Pacific Northwest crops featuring fresh ingredients sourced from local farms, foraged from the region’s land as well as SCP Redmond Hotel’s very own rooftop garden.” The result is a plant-forward menu offering nourishing light bites, shareable plates and carefully crafted beverages. Partnerships with local farmers in the high desert community prioritize both diner health and environmental sustainability.

Gourmet pizza from SCP Redmond Hotel

Standout dishes include the grilled watermelon with burrata, a refreshing and flavorful starter evoking the essence of summer. The jackfruit nachos offer bold and hearty flavors crafted from plant-based ingredients for the adventurous palate. The pizzas feature a 72-hour fermented poolish dough for a crust that’s both flavorful and easily digestible. Ortiz added, “Our special sourdough culture has been carefully developed over time with a focus on promoting healthy digestion and a strong immune system.”

The menu’s “hyper-local” ingredients are mentioned often for good reason. “Perennial plantings such as mulberries, strawberries, pears, cilantro, mint, parsley, rosemary and apples thrive in SCP Redmond’s gardens,” Colvin noted. These ingredients aren’t merely garnishes; they play a central role in the cocktail menu as well.

Drink cheers on rooftop

From Garden by the Sea, a snap pea daiquiri with fresh cucumber and snap pea-infused rum, to the Matcha Do About Nothing, incorporating vodka infused with Metolius matcha and honey, each drink offers local flavors that make for bright and effervescent summer patio cocktails. Additionally, The Rooftop offers an array of thoughtful nonalcoholic refreshments, such as the 6 am at the Farmer’s Market, a herbaceous spritzer blending fresh herbs, green tea and house-made celery shrub.

Since its inception, The Rooftop has become a gathering place for Central Oregonians. “It provides a space for the community to gather and celebrate,” Colvin reflected. From hosting weddings to offering a space for locals and travelers alike to unwind and connect, The Rooftop has become a cornerstone of the area — with a bird’s eye view.

Day 1

Afternoon

Check-in at SCP Redmond Hotel, the eco-friendly hotel located in Redmond’s quaint downtown. With its warm and earthy design elements inspired by the Central Oregon landscape, you’ll begin to feel at ease the moment you arrive.

For a truly immersive wellness experience, be sure to book a Peaceful Room mindfully designed to enhance relaxation and encourage better sleep. With a meditation pillow, oil diffuser, yoga mat and no electronic screen, it’s the perfect sanctuary for some much-deserved rest and relaxation.

Once settled in, head outdoors to spend the rest of the afternoon soaking up the Central Oregon scenery. The Eagle Crest River Walk is an easy 2.5-mile trail near Redmond that’s perfect for trail running or a leisurely stroll along the river.

Evening

When you return, make your way to The Rooftop, the hotel’s rooftop garden for craft cocktails and local bites to toast your arrival. Find yourself surrounded by a serene native garden and panoramic views of the Cascade mountain range. With the best seat in Central Oregon to watch the sunset, it’s guaranteed to be an unforgettable dining experience.

The views are just the beginning; the beautiful cuisine is the true show-stopper. Each cocktail and mocktail features fresh fruits and herbs picked from the rooftop garden and the small plates are crafted with locally sourced ingredients.

Once the sun has set and you feel satiated, retreat to your room for a relaxing evening. Fall asleep soundly, knowing that you’re not only taking care of yourself but also directly supporting organizations making a positive social impact. With each stay at an SCP Hotel, you provide one adolescent with mental health resources, light the home of one family caring for a critically ill child for 24 hours, and plant one tree in an unnaturally deforested area.

Day 2: Morning

Start the morning by elevating your heart rate at SCP Fit in the hotel. The state-of-the-art boutique fitness space is fully equipped with Peloton bikes, TRX machines, and weight racks, available for any hotel guest to use. Once you’ve worked up a sweat, take a quiet moment in the peaceful meditation room to clear your head and set an intention for your day.

Next, head to Provisions Market to fuel up with a plant-forward breakfast. The menu features items such as a bagel breakfast sandwich with eggs from a local farm, french toast with sourdough from a nearby bakery, and oatmeal topped with fresh Oregon berries. Refreshing smoothies and locally roasted coffee are also available.

With a day of activity ahead, grab a salad or sandwich to-go so you can fuel up later in the day. The Mediterranean hummus wrap and crunchy cashew quinoa salad come with high praise.

Once you’ve stocked up, it’s time for some soul-enriching, heart-pumping time in nature. Grab a water bottle and throw on your favorite adventure apparel, we’re heading to Smith Rock State Park.

Afternoon

Located just fifteen minutes from downtown Redmond, Smith Rock is home to scenic hiking trails, rugged canyon landscapes and world-renowned rock climbing. The best way to see everything that this state park offers is by hiking the Misery Ridge loop. This hike is more breathtaking than miserable. The summit provides an insane bird’s eye view of Central Oregon, making it the perfect spot to stop and catch your breath before continuing.

Mark McInnis, SCP, SCP Redmond

Afterward, make your way back to the hotel and take some time to unwind. If you have work that needs to be done, head to SCP Commons, a beautiful coworking space designed to inspire both creativity and productivity.

Once you’re done with work for the day, swing by the Wayfarer Club for tavern-inspired small plates such as Spanish roasted nuts, citrus marinated olives, jackfruit tacos and more. There is also an extensive libations menu to browse through. Check out one of the adventure books laying around and enjoy a cozy afternoon. It’s been a busy day and there’s still a night full of nourishing food and fun waiting for you.

Evening

Dinner at Terra Kitchen, SCP’s plant-forward and locally sourced restaurant is an absolute must. The true farm-to-table dining experience is committed to crafting food that’s good for you, good for the community, good for the planet…and just really, really good. The kitchen’s close partnership with surrounding farms allows it to source the freshest ingredients possible while also supporting the burgeoning local food scene. The seasonally rotating menu draws inspiration from blue zones, Mediterranean cuisine and Pacific Northwest crops, resulting in a fusion of healthy, flavorful and sustainable dishes.

For an appetizer, try the Mushroom Pesto Tartine. It is grilled rye sourdough topped with kale pesto, mushroom duxelles, manchego, Fresno pepper, citrus arugula and hazelnut. For a refreshing salad, try the Terra Summer Salad. It’s full of local leafy greens, burrata, grilled watermelon, sugar snap peas, sunflower seeds and mint, all tossed with a ginger lemon vinaigrette. Check out the libations menu for a wide variety of handcrafted cocktails and mocktails, natural wines, and local beers – guaranteed to enhance your dining experience.

The Farm Vegetable Paella is a delicious first-course option. This dish offers aromatic saffron rice mixed with chorizo-seasoned cauliflower, snap peas, fennel, kale and whipped ricotta-chevre. It’s then topped with harissa-romesco sauce and a piece of grilled bread. The Primavera Pasta is another nutrient-dense and flavorful dish. Linguini is served with tarragon kale pesto, roasted garlic, cured egg yolk, charred broccolini, and garlic scapes.

With the brûlée cheesecake, a handcrafted Medjool and walnut crust filled with marionberry compote, you no longer have to choose between your wellbeing and a mouthwatering dessert.

Day 3: Morning

Before packing your bags, begin your morning with another sweat at SCP Fit or with a moment of gratitude in the meditation room. Enjoy breakfast at Provisions Market and grab some healthy snacks for the road. Leave feeling nourished and refueled, dreaming of the next time you’ll be back.

Campfire Cuisine Elevated: Chefs Revolutionize Outdoor Dining in Central Oregon

Out in the wild, culinary disasters can strike as surely as rain: with sandwiches soggy enough to double as sponges, mediocre meals that taste suspiciously like yesterday’s hotdogs and blame flung as freely as snack wrappers. Such gastronomic misadventures are legendary among those who venture into nature. Fortunately, the era of cooler chaos and frayed nerves is giving way to a revolution among the pines as innovative chefs transform Central Oregon’s great outdoors into a grand dining hall. Humble campfire fare can be elevated to sublime feasts, proving that the best tables in town are under a vast sky in the middle of nowhere.

Elevated Eats Made Easy by Pacaya

Once upon a smoky campfire, Jason Eckhoff and Chris Arathoon found themselves lamenting the culinary woes of camping with kids—from hastily grabbed convenience food on the way out of town to lackluster meals that sparked more groans than glee. “What if outdoor food was actually good?” they wondered. Not just passable, but mouthwateringly spectacular. From the ashes of mealtime misfires, their company Pacaya was born.

Named for a Guatemalan volcano and just as fiery in its ambitions, Pacaya is redefining what it means to eat well in the wild. No more last-minute dashes to the grocery store or the dreaded realization that the butter sits forgotten on the kitchen counter. Pacaya’s meal kits are the antithesis of traditional camp food. They are meticulously planned and locally sourced, with a dash of international flair. Offerings include flavor-packed hits such as Pork Carnitas Tacos with Guatemalan refried beans or Flatiron Steak paired with Chimichurri sauce. This isn’t roughing it; it’s dining out—way out.

The genius of Pacaya lies in its simplicity and attention to detail. Each meal kit is portioned and packed in a pre-chilled Yeti cooler and weather-proof dry box, turning the wilderness into a makeshift gourmet kitchen. Every component is labeled, organized and accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions, reducing both waste and the common campsite squabbling over who forgot to pack what. Even the culinary novice can prepare a feast under the stars in 20 minutes or less using one pot and one pan.

From their famous Easy Clean-up Western Omelette, made with pasture-raised eggs that slide out of the bag perfectly, leaving nothing to clean, to the Walking Tamale that promises mid-day mobility and flavor in every bite, Pacaya has simplified the outdoor dining experience without compromising on taste. “We want you to have fun in the woods instead of stressing over shopping, prepping and cleaning,” said Eckhoff. “Get outside, have an adventure, and leave the meal planning to us.”

Taste the Wild with Luckey’s Woodsman

At Luckey’s Woodsman Off-Grid Provisions in Sisters, Jackson Higdon draws on his heritage and love for the outdoors to deliver a menu that bridges Old-World techniques with modern culinary trends. Inspired by his grandparents’ original establishment, Luckey’s Woodsman celebrates the wild abundance of Central Oregon in several aways. He has a brick-and mortar-shop, food truck and hosts events, such as a forager’s dinner where diners gather raw foods he prepares for a feast in the forest.

Outdoor cooking over the fire by Luckey's Woodman

Luckey’s menu features hearty but healthy dishes that reflect the untamed spirit of the forest. The Lumberjack—a guest favorite—features a 14-hour smoked brisket paired with local greens and woodsman beans, drizzled with pesto and chipotle aioli. Each dish celebrates the region’s natural bounty, crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

For adventurers on the go, Luckey’s offers Camper Kits—conveniently prepared meals just a phone call or email away. Hot kits are designed to be warmed on a stove or over a campfire. Cold boxes are packed with items such as the Wanderlust Wrap, guaranteed to withstand the day’s journey without turning soggy.

As a purveyor of outdoor-inspired cuisine, Higdon insists, “The forest shares its bounty generously; we must honor it.” Deeply ingrained into every slice and simmer, this ethos is a nod to promise that was printed on his grandparents’ original menu over 60 years ago of The Woodsman Way: “To honor all who stand in awe and appreciation of the great outdoors.”

The brains behind AlpenGlow Adventure Catering, the duo blends extensive culinary expertise with outdoor logistics prowess, showing Central Oregon that gourmet meals genuinely belong in the wild.

Octane Adventures: Experience Central Oregon’s Hidden Gems on ATVs

Without a doubt, we have a lot of outdoor activities to experience in Bend. From hundreds of miles of mountain biking trails to cooling off by floating the Deschutes River, it can seem like recreation in Central Oregon is endless.

That is, until you’ve lived here for a while and feel like you’ve done all that Bend offers. But the truth is, you haven’t discovered the next best thing: exploring trails on an ATV.

Here at Bend Magazine, we try our very best to keep you updated on the happenings around Central Oregon and what to do on any given day, any time of year. So, when Matt Miller and his crew at Octane Adventures invited us out for a day of four-wheeling on some of Central Oregon’s ATV trails, we jumped at the opportunity and thought we’d bring you along for the adventure.

Heading out on the trails with Octane Adventures

Hitting the Trails with Octane Adventures

Octane Adventures offers a few different trips, both guided and self-guided. After reading rave reviews online, we opted for the guided tour, which we strongly recommend, too. Octane Adventures guides take you to all the best local spots as they know the area like the back of their hands. Access areas and views most people won’t reach even on the most epic hiking days. Propelled on four wheels, see lava flows, serene alpine lakes and views of the Cascade Range. Plus, with our guide leading the way, we didn’t waste time circling the same backroads, missing the best viewpoints, spots to cool off, or secret trails. We could focus on the fun, with no risk of getting lost. Despite maps on smartphones, ATV routes can take riders pretty far out there in areas with little to no cell service.

Take the tour with Octane Adventures Octane Adventures offers two different guided tours: If you only have two hours, check out Octane’s High Cascade Scenic Tour. As the name suggests, the High Cascades Scenic Tour will take you deep into Central Oregon’s backroads, to spectacular viewpoints nearly inaccessible by regular vehicles.

If you have more time, consider Octane Adventures’ Black Sands ATV Tour. The Black Sands tour gets deep into Central Oregon’s backcountry, featuring some of the area’s most challenging trails and backroads. Stunning mountain views, lakes, streams, and lava flows await you on this 4-hour ATV experience.

Black Sands outside Sisters, Oregon

Tours with Octane Adventures take you so close to the Cascade Range that you can nearly reach out and touch the mountains. After winding down pine forest backcountry roads, you come upon some of the most pristine lakes and remarkable geological features, like lava flows and lava tube caves. We watched as bald eagles soared overhead. It is truly unbelievable to know this is right here in our backyard! Bend Magazine’s guided tour with Octane Adventures had us riding up to Little Cache Mountain near Mount Washington for some of the most spectacular 360-degree views we have ever seen.

Through the pond at Black Sands Oregon

To say we had fun would be an understatement.

Octane Adventures

If you have a handle on the area and know where to go, signing up for a self-guided tour is an option. Rental of one of Octane’s side-by-side ATVs, for four- or eight-hour rental options. The price of a four-hour rental was same as the four-hour Black Sands ATV Tour, so we opted to go with a guide to uncover Central Oregon’s secret spots.

How an Octane Adventures Trip Works

Booking a trip through Octane Adventures’ website is super easy. First, choose between the High Cascades, Black Sands, or self-guided trips. Next, select the dates you want to go — Octane Adventures will automatically filter out the days they are fully booked on their calendar. Lastly, after you confirm your booking, you’ll receive a booking confirmation with all the information you need for your ATV adventure.

Polaris ATV rentals through Octane Adventures

On the day of your trip, you’ll meet Octane Adventures at their trailhead in Sisters, where they will have their brand new Polaris RZR XP1000 4-seaters waiting for you. And, yes, despite this being a “guided” tour, you and up to three friends will be driving one of these go-anywhere, off-road machines.

Driving the Polaris side-by-side should come naturally, as automatic transmission and power steering make them very similar to the car you showed up in. And don’t be afraid of getting lost, as each side-by-side is equipped with a user-friendly GPS navigation system. That way, you can track where the other vehicles are on the map at all times. Everyone stays together on this excursion.

Prepare to get wet in tiny streams ATV riding Sisters Oregon

Before you follow your guide deep into the forest, Octane Adventures goes over a few safety items. You’ll discuss where you are going and get a comprehensive orientation of how to operate the side-by-side. Next, you’ll be fitted for a helmet and goggles, both provided by Octane Adventures. And before the pedal hits the floor, you’ll be shown how to strap into the 3-point harness in your seat properly.

GPS screen in Polaris ATV

If you want to amp up your safety knowledge, watch the ATV safety and trail etiquette videos, along with a liability release form sent to you beforehand—they’re packed with useful tips, especially if this is your first time operating an ATV.

Pro Tips from the Trail

  1. Use the bathroom before leaving home, there are no facilities in the backcountry.
  2. Pack water, snacks, or lunch (you can rent a cooler from Octane).
  3. Be sure to stay hydrated and fueled to fully enjoy your epic adventure!

Now, you’re ready to ride. See you on the trails!

Explore Winters with Octane, Too

When the temperature drops and snow begins to fall, Octane Adventures trades their side-by-sides for snowmobiles. And while they explore the Cascade Mountains outside of Sisters during the summer, Octane heads south to explore Newberry Crater in the winter.

Octane Adventures offers three different guided snowmobile tours. The first is a two-hour tour of some of the most scenic locations at Newberry Crater. Two hours is added to the second tour option, with a stop at the historic Paulina Lake Lodge for food and drinks (which we highly recommend). The third tour has riders chasing the sunset around Newberry Crater to catch some of the most spectacular golden hour views.

Hush Hush Coffee: A Unique Coffee Adventure in Central Oregon

Hush Hush Coffee in Central Oregon Merges Outdoor Adventure and Quality Coffee

On a freezing February morning, I was up before the sun, putting on extra layers before heading out the front door. My mission was to get the day’s first cup of coffee.

However, this was no ordinary stop-in at my local cafe. On this particular morning I would be having a Hush Hush Coffee nomadic cafe experience at the hosted pop-up gathering by invitation that combines some of Central Oregon’s favorite niche locations with specialty coffee service.

Early morning in bend hiking to Hush Hush Coffee Event

Other coffee adventurers would join, too. Multiple paths through four inches of fresh snow snaked their way to the overlook at Overturf Park as the sun rose. At the top, Ron Sparks and Adam Foster, the founders of Hush Hush Coffee, set up a small camping table with everything needed to make a morning cup for their guests.

While Foster and Sparks labored over how coarse to grind the beans and what roasts would satisfy their guests, patrons mingled. From the outside, it would appear as a group of regulars. However, upon listening to the conversations around me, I began picking up on a similar theme—like me, this was many people’s first time at a Hush Hush event.

owners set up before attendees arive

For more than two hours, strangers shared their morning cup of coffee together, leaving as friends. Foster and Sparks periodically made their way through the crowd, topping cups off and boasting of a new blend they had just brewed. We were happy to oblige.

After the nomadic cafe experience, I followed the same path back through the snow, although more had accumulated, and returned down through Overturf Park to my car. Later, I caught up with Sparks and Foster to take a deep dive into the origins of Hush Hush, both the coffee and the experience.

First cup of Hush Hush Coffee

The Hush Hush Concept Kicks Off as Coffee with Friends

Hush Hush, the concept, found its roots about as organically as the coffee that Foster and Sparks brew. The two friends regularly took their lunch breaks at Riverbend Park, especially when the sun was shining. Along with their lunches, the two would bring their coffee paraphernalia.

“We would make pour-overs from our built-up coffee travel kits housed inside Stanley lunch boxes,” Sparks said.

Eventually, the pair invited some friends to join them. In August of 2022, with five others in attendance, Hush Hush had their first “official” nomadic cafe. “It was just a few friends hanging out before work and enjoying whatever coffee we happened to be digging that week,” Sparks said.

grinding coffee beans

Both men had previous experience working in the coffee industry, and it seemed the coffee bug didn’t leave them. “Ron purchased a small, 1kg commercial roaster just so we could play around with roasting and cupping different coffees in his garage,” Foster said. They would always roast more than needed, discreetly giving the extra to family and friends—or “hush-hush,” as they would say.

Foster and Sparks’ love for coffee is clear. They can often be overheard discussing the subject in great detail. Sparks and Foster’s passion shines through as they grind and brew truly phenomenally-tasting coffee. However, they are not coffee snobs. Rather, they just want to share a better cup of coffee with you.

Quality coffee is at the center of a Hush Hush experience. “We are very much the opposite of a traditional cafe,” Sparks said. “We do everything intentionally slowly; we weigh our coffee, hand grind our coffee and hand-pour.” The fullness of the coffee-making process is evident at the nomadic cafes, and, dare I say, somehow makes the coffee taste better.

attendees waiting for cup of coffee

Hush Hush roasts its own beans, which it serves at its nomadic cafes. It also supports smaller roasters, both locally and abroad. Lone Pine Coffee and Portland’s Elevator Coffee were among the bean options offered at the event.

“We love all kinds of coffee,” Foster said. “We love to explore what’s in season and what new processes roasters are experimenting with. We each have our own go-to favorite style.” Foster leans toward Ethiopian, funky and fruity blends, while Sparks tends to enjoy Central American beans, with more of a chocolatey profile and just a touch of citrus.

Why a “Nomadic Cafe” Experience?

Apart from keeping a high bar for the coffee beans it serves, a key aspect of Hush Hush Coffee is its nomadic cafe experience. Sparks and Foster are clear that the concept is purposeful.

“We figured we could utilize our passions for coffee and community as an excuse to bring people together in our favorite place to slow down and reflect: the outdoors,” Foster said.

Making the Coffee at Hush Hush

And this is exactly what happens at a Hush Hush nomadic cafe. A hike or bike ride on a trail to get there is an investment in the experience. And, if you have time to hike into a location, you likely have time to stick around and chat, to develop the Hush Hush community in that moment. This isn’t a rushed morning waiting in line for your latte at a coffee retail giant. On the contrary, you can expect to enjoy your carefully crafted coffee while chatting with someone new.

“The heart of Hush Hush is that we love coffee, community and adventure,” Foster and Sparks said. “There’s something really fun about inviting people out to join this little morning ritual with each other and having them interact back.”

Coffee Outdoors or Delivered to Your Door

Beyond offerings at its nomadic cafes, Foster and Sparks are launching a monthly subscription program to bring Hush Hush Coffees to the hands of coffee lovers.

Since Hush Hush Coffee emphasizes people finding themselves outside, Foster and Sparks have created their subscription-based coffee experience to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

“For each subscription delivery, a tree is planted by [environmental nonprofit] One Tree Planted. Four percent of all profit goes to protect outside spaces, and we’ve made our packaging completely home and industrial compostable,” Sparks shared.

Hush Hush Coffee Beans

With the help of friends, the pair also hopes to extend Hush Hush nomadic cafes outside of Oregon. “We’d love to see a Hush Hush Nomadic Cafe set up in every state in the U.S. to get people outside and connect over coffee,” he said.

So, how do you attend the next Hush Hush Coffee nomadic cafe experience? Easy: follow Hush Hush Coffee on Instagram. Foster and Sparks typically host a nomadic cafe every month, which they will post about, usually the day before. Direct message Hush Hush Coffee when you see the post, and a response will include a date, time and location.

It is truly a coffee adventure.

We hope this event further connects our community to local food in a fun and interactive way.” -Katrina Van Dis, Executive Director

HDFFA believes everyone deserves good food–defined as fresh, affordable and culturally appropriate foods that are sustainably produced in Central Oregon. As part of their mission, HDFFA improves access to local food from regional farmers for limited-income residents through various programs. Proceeds from this event will support their Food Access and Agricultural Support programs. This includes the Fresh Harvest Kit project: HDFFA collaborates with local farms and hunger relief agencies to offer meal kits at regional food pantries and community organizations. These ready-to-make meal kits combine fresh vegetables and pantry staples, along with a recipe, to create a nutritious and delicious meal on a budget.

Going, Going, GONE…Vanishing Glaciers in the Deschutes Basin

Oregon’s glaciers are the natural water reservoirs of the high Cascade water towers. Glacier meltwater sustains rivers during the late summer and fall for flora, fauna and irrigation. The glacier melt chills streams for salmon and trout, with the attendant effect of cooling surrounding forests that reduces fire risk and intensity. In short, glaciers are an integral part of Central Oregon ecosystems and economies.

And yet, we do not know how many glaciers remain today in the basin, let alone how many existed a century ago. In this talk, Dr. Anders Carlson will present on the Oregon Glacier Institute’s findings from the first census of glaciers in Oregon since the 1950s. We will examine how these glacier changes are related to regional climate change, concluding the discussion on what the future holds for the remaining glaciers in the Deschutes Basin.

OVER THE EDGE for United Way of Deschtes County

Are you a thrill seeker with a heart for your community?
Face your fears. So our community’s most vulnerable don’t have to.
It’s scary for those who wake up in the morning not knowing where they will sleep that night, if they will eat that day, if they will be assaulted or abused that day.
On Saturday, September 7, 2019, OVER THE EDGE participants will help alleviate some of that daily fear faced by so many… by rappelling off the roof of the Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend.
You’re invited to rappel, volunteer, or sponsor the event!
Edgers – those who rappel – are invited to raise funds to support our community in exchange for the exhilarating experience of rappelling off the tallest building in Central Oregon. The Oxford Hotel stands at 7 stories and 70 feet and will offer quite a thrill to Edgers.
Participants need not be brave or young or non-disabled to go OVER THE EDGE. However, there are a limited number of spots, so interested folks should sign up today, as registration is now open. Once registered, Edgers set up a personal fundraising page, reach their fundraising goal, and secure their spot to rappel off the Oxford Hotel on September 7th.
In addition to the rappel, United Way will be hosting a ground party – closing NW Minnesota Ave and NW Lava Rd to traffic in order to host food vendors, a Sunriver Brewing Company beer garden, activities, DJs, and more.
For those who are not ready to rappel, United Way gives other opportunities to partner with one of Bend’s most reputable and longest-standing nonprofit organizations. The local nonprofit is seeking business sponsors for the event, as well as volunteers.
To sign up or for more information, visit www.deschutesunitedway.org/overtheedge or call 541-389-6507.

Loop to Loop

Cycling from Sisters to Smith Rock

written by Sebastian Foltz

Brisk mornings, less traffic and changing leaves make fall in the High Desert an ideal time for both road and mountain biking. You don’t have to travel far from Bend to be the only person on a road or trail. It’s what makes the fall shoulder season a favorite time among local riders. “To me, fall in Central Oregon is the nicest time,” said Brad Boyd, owner of Eurosports bike shop in Sisters. “Cooler temperatures, less wind; I’m always amazed how quiet it is.” While in spring you might still be waiting for snow to melt at higher elevations, and summer heat can make riding a bear, the right fall day is without equal. With that in mind we’re focusing on the Sisters area and offering up three fall road rides that you don’t need to have Tour de France-level conditioning to enjoy.

MCKENZIE PASS

The thirty-mile, out-and-back ride from Sisters culminates at the historic Dee Wright observatory lookout, a one-of-a-kind structure carved out of solid lava rock by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps, some eighty years ago.  The intrepid explorer will also find distinct remnants of the 1860 wagon trail that was similarly carved out of the unyielding lava beds and remains largely as it was when the route was abandoned in the 1920s.

While it gains roughly 2,100 feet of elevation, the climb is spread gradually throughout the ride, particularly on the final eleven miles.

“For someone who is comfortable riding on roads and can handle a hill, it’s great ride,” said Alex Phillips, Oregon Parks & Recreation Department bicycle recreation specialist.

From Sisters, the ride cruises past horse ranches and into a thick forest of tall Ponderosa pines. The real climb begins roughly four miles in, but continues at a steady, manageable rate. The final five miles open up with views of the expansive lava fields. Mount Jefferson looms in the distance.

Boyd suggested continuing on an additional five miles of rolling highway to Scott Lake, before the pass begins the lion share of its 3,600-foot decent to the McKenzie River Valley.

“That section, in both directions, is just fantastic,” he said.

METOLIOUS RIVER/CAMP SHERMAN

If climbing isn’t your thing, consider the Metolius River/Camp Sherman area. Formerly designated a Scenic Bikeway by the state, the region has a hidden gem quality, especially in the fall.

“It’s a beautiful area. People love riding there,” said Phillips. With the crystal-clear headwaters of the Metolius, historic Camp Sherman and a variety of roads are scattered through Ponderosa pine forest, offering loops from three miles to around twenty miles with options for thirty-mile plus rides. There’s something for everyone with minimal elevation gain and occasional mountain vistas.

“We tell people September and October are the best months to be here,” said Camp Sherman Store owner Roger White.

“Everything lines up perfectly. Once we start into fall the colors start and the weather gets even better. Traffic drops off a lot. Come the start of school, there will be a lot less people.”

Boyd agreed.

“There’re some beautiful colors there,” he added, describing fall. “There’s nothing going on. You’re pretty much by yourself.”

ALONG THE WAY
Each of our three fall rides offer a variety of stops and sites along the way. Consider starting your day in Sisters with a morning coffee at Sisters Coffee Company or breakfast at Sisters Bakery. For additional ride information visit Brad Boyd’s Eurosports bike shop in town or nearby Blazing Saddles bike shop. Boyd, a longtime area resident, offers a number of beers on tap for post-ride celebration in the shop’s beer garden. In the summer, the shop hosts a number of food carts, which Boyd said may remain open on weekends through the fall. Three Creeks Brewery, just outside of Sisters on the way to Bend, also makes a solid option for a post-ride bite and brew.

SISTERS TO SMITH ROCK

The lesser known Sisters to Smith Rock Scenic Bike Ride also makes for a great fall ride. Less prone to fall colors, the route from Sisters east through Terrebonne gives a taste of the High Desert without the blazing summer heat.

“People don’t tend to focus on it, and it’s spectacularly beautiful,” said Phillips. “A lot of people think it’s all downhill one way. It’s really not. It’s a lot of rolling hills.”

The thirty-seven-mile route (one-way) fluctuates within a range of 660 feet of elevation gains and losses. Phillips recommends it as a great introduction to bike touring, with camping options on either end of the route.

Boyd also suggested shortening it to an out-and-back by turning around where the route crosses the Deschutes River, a little more than halfway through the ride.

With its high desert climate, this route remains a solid option through much of the winter and long after snow has begun to fall on the Metolius area and McKenzie Pass.

Alchemy at Caldera

Transforming by means of creativity.

Caldera is many things. An arts camp for underserved youth. An environmental organization focused on youth development. A program that nurtures adult artists. The organization puts in place people and processes to transform human beings in mysterious and impressive ways. At the end of the day, one could argue that Caldera might be akin to alchemy.

Caldera was originally created in 1996 as a program to bring together limited-opportunity kids from both the city and the country to make art. It seemed simple. A fun summer camp with music, drawing and writing, as well as hiking, canoeing and campfires.

But the alchemy started immediately. Kids found out they were artists. They realized they could use creativity to solve life problems. And they were transformed.

Now in its twentieth year, Caldera’s Youth Program has been named one of the top fifty youth development organizations in the United States by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Last year it was one of the top twelve programs honored at the White House. Today, Caldera works with twelve partner middle schools in Portland and Central Oregon, offering art and nature programs to 430 middle and high school youth, as well as providing year-round mentoring and camps to at-risk kids.

Realizing that grownups could use a little alchemy, too, Caldera opened up its doors during the winter to adult artists and creative thinkers. These artists now work onsite for month-long residencies as part of an Artist in Residence program.

The natural next step of the alchemical process was to blend the Caldera Youth Programs and the Artist in Residence programs.

“It’s our belief that by having the youth work with a variety of talented adult artists, committed environmental stewards, and caring mentors, they are introduced to a variety of ways in which creativity can be expressed, which will encourage their own creativity and help them grow,” said Elia Unverzagt, communications director for Caldera. “They see value in expressing their own creativity and unique voices, and become able to imagine a new set of possibilities for their lives.”

Artists in Residence work with kids at every level. Youths may be invited on studio tours, interview artists, or participate in workshops. Some artists come back to teach at Camp Caldera during the summers, finding that collaboration with another generation can be generative and, thus, transformative.

At the end of the day, the alchemy Caldera offers happens by using creativity of all sorts to facilitate a deeper sense of self and possibly a greater humanity in both children and adults. ‒Katrina Hays

Retreat to Sunriver Oregon

The thinking in Sunriver is that community happens not in lines, but in circles. Seventeen miles southwest of Bend, the same meadows where wagon trains circled in the 1800s still beckon travelers to come, slow down and lose themselves in the beauty of Central Oregon. Tucked into the woods, and dotted with eleven traffic circles (there is no circle eight), more than 3,000 acres comprise this community where travelers and locals alike come to get away from their overscheduled lives and out into nature.

These fields and forests have hosted a variety of people throughout history. During World War II, the government purchased 5,500 acres for Camp Abbot, an Army Corps of Engineers combat-training facility that housed thousands of soldiers from 1942 to 1944. The last remaining building, the officer’s club, still serves as a place for social gatherings, hosting weddings and events as the Great Hall at Sunriver Resort.

In the late 1960s, a group of developers envisioned a residential community centered around a resort and Sunriver was born. Like home but without the hassles of regular life, the scenic vacation spot continues to entice visitors to come enjoy recreation like hiking, tennis, river kayaking, fly fishing, birding, horseback riding and world-class golf, as well as running and biking around Sunriver’s more than 30 miles of paved pathways. Even with so many options for activity, perhaps the best part of Sunriver is the chance to really relax, whether it’s in a hammock or a hot tub, and enjoy the luxury of leisure time.

In the summertime, guests can swing golf clubs at one of four golf courses, including Crosswater, a former host course for a PGA Legends Tour stop. Splash down a waterslide at aquatic centers such as SHARC or The Cove, Sunriver Resort’s newest outdoor swimming facility. In July, Balloons Over Sunriver fills the sky with floating hot-air balloons, August brings in classical strings for the Sunriver Music Festival, and families flock to the Twilight Cinema Nights, showing free movies under the stars during August and September.

See

Benham Falls
One of the largest waterfalls on the Upper Deschutes River, Benham Falls is also one of the easiest and the most accessible hikes. Walk or bike the 6.6-mile paved out-and-back trail that connects Sunriver Resort to the falls, where singletrack side trails offer various route options for longer treks.

Play

Golf, Swim and Stars
Recreation opportunities abound at Sunriver, which was designed with fun in mind. Play golf at one of four golf courses, splash in the water park at SHARC, go horse riding at the stables or see local wildlife up close at the nature center. At night, gaze up at the summer sky and see stars at the Oregon Observatory.

Eat

Bistros and Brewpubs
Serving Sunriver since 2004, South Bend Bistro blends Italian influences with Northwest ingredients. Chef Day has curated a menu that tells a story of the Northwest through regional flavors and ingredients. For something more casual, grab bites and beers at the original Sunriver Brewing Company located in The Village at Sunriver.

Shop

The Village at Sunriver
From sports shops to retail, The Village at Sunriver features stores with souvenirs for all seasons. Seek stylish finds at Village Threads, take kids to the ever-popular Tumbleweeds Toys or stop in at Sunriver Books & Music to pick up a good read and hear a local author’s book talk.
