On St. Patrick’s Day many drink Irish stouts. On Halloween, some of us drink pumpkin beers. So celebrate Arbor Day by coming to The Ale Apothecary to try over a dozen different TREE BEERS. Yes, beers made with ingredients foraged from West Coast forests and beyond, ingredients such as spruce tips, fir tips, juniper berries, bark, lichen, and even tree-dwelling mushrooms.
It’s worth noting that Bend’s only all-wild brewery, The Ale Apothecary, originated with a Sahati-style ale, native to Finland, brewed in a hand-hollowed Sitka Spruce tree from the Skyline Forest where the brewery remains. People who purchase the VITree package will be shuttled, courtesy of Cog Wild, from the Century Blvd. tasting room to the private brewery for tours and samples of vintage tree beers.
Purchase a ticket for either session, 12 – 3pm or 4 – 7pm, and you’ll be welcomed at the Apoth tasting room with your first three pours of tree beers included. There will be over a dozen tree beers including many from like-minded breweries from around Oregon, up and down the Pacific Coast, and clear across to the Eastern shore. These include our friends at Alesong (Eugene), De Garde (Tillamook), Upright (Portland), Block 15 (Corvallis) & Fort George (Astoria), Wolf Tree (Seal Rock), McMenamins Thompson Brewery (Salem), Jester King (Austin, TX), Propolis (Port Townsend, WA), Fruition (Watsonville, CA), Scratch Brewing (Ava, IL) and Wunderkammer Biermanufaktur (Wolcott, VT)
Packages of 4 drink tickets for $10 will be available. Paid admission also includes a souvenir coaster made from branches. There will be a food truck on site and a la carte axe-throwing courtesy of Unofficial Logging Co., Bend’s only hatchet-throwing bar.

Raise your beer steins and dust off your lederhosen because it’s time to celebrate Oktoberfest in Central Oregon! Even if rowdy singalongs in crowded pubs aren’t up your alley, there are plenty of other (more chill) ways to celebrate German culture. In this DIY guide, find recommendations on where to indulge in traditional German cuisine and of course, plenty of frothy brews. Prost!
Drinks to Imbibe During Oktoberfest in Central Oregon
With a quick pub-hop—or should we say biergarten crawl—around Bend, it’s easy to find a handful of beers paying homage to traditional German brews. Whether you stay for a pint, pick up a growler to go or grab a six-pack from the store, there are plenty of options to kick off an Oktoberfest evening.
Bavarian lager at GoodLife
This German Telles-style lager is a crisp and refreshing beer combining clean American bittering hops and some German Czech Saaz hops—it’s light and drinkable and tastes great in the GoodLife bierhall tasting room or biergarden, off 14th Avenue in west Bend. It’s also available in a growler to-go.
Crux Pilz
Try this unfiltered German pilsner from Crux, featuring noble German hop bitterness. Crux Pilz is available from Crux Fermentation Project tucked away in an industrial area near Highway 97 in the center of Bend, and the Pilz is canned and available for purchase from retailers throughout Central Oregon.
Worthy Tenmile Dry Hopped Lager
Described by brewmaster Dustin Kellner as a “German lager that IPA lovers will adore,” the Tenmile Lager by Worthy is a dry-hopped German lager with Strata hops and fruity flavors. Some proceeds from sales of this beer support the brewery’s Worthy Garden Club campaign, Operation Appleseed. The goal of the campaign is to plant one million trees in Oregon, beginning with an old clear-cut parcel on Tenmile Creek, an area in the Siuslaw National Forest near the Pacific Ocean, just south of Yachats, Oregon.
Main Dishes to Enjoy During Oktoberfest in Central Oregon
Bangers and Brews
This unassuming counter-service joint in west Bend has ranked among Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. for the past three years, actually topping the list (yes, #1) last year. To keep it strictly German you’d have to pass on the fan-favorite bangers and mash, but no need to be disappointed—the traditional German bratwurst (with the twist of chimichurri) is sure to satisfy, as is the pretzel and cheese.
We’re the Wurst
Grill up an Oktoberfest feast right in your backyard using a variety of sausages from Bend’s We’re the Wurst, including the signature German bratwurst. There’s no way to go wrong cooking up these meaty treats, often served with mustard and sauerkraut. Find We’re the Wurst at grocery stores around Central Oregon and toss it on the grill at home, or hire We’re the Wurst chef Matthew Fidler to cater a private Oktoberfest meal. For a meal with a view, try the bratwurst with house-made aioli off the menu at Monkless Belgian Ales, near the Box Factory and overlooking the Deschutes River.
Desert
Let’s not forget the icing on the cake of an Oktoberfest meal—the dessert. While traditional German desserts like Bienenstich (also known as bee sting cake) are hard to come by in the high desert, finding mouth-watering German chocolate is still on the table. Place a custom order from Market of Choice for a German chocolate cream pie with dark chocolate custard and coconut flakes inside a buttery crust coated with chocolate ganache. It’s the perfect ending to a build-your-own Oktoberfest feast.

Come for an evening of sharing your adventure stories with others in the outdoor community. Settle in to listen or get prepared to share your adventure stories in 10 minutes or less from 7-9 PM. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
You can’t shred gnar, bomb down trail, climb volcanoes, and run whitewater all the time. But at Boldly Went we know that when you’re not, you want to talk about your adventures with other people who get it – probably over beer. And every thru hiker, trail runner, mountain biker, climber, paddler, sailor, scuba diver, flyer, and Indiana Jones wannabe has at least one story that will inspire, inform, or at least entertain the rest of us, so we’re pulling together crowds of you and randomly selecting you to go on stage to give us your best.
How it works: Event format is casual and starts with a brief review of how to tell a good outdoor adventure story. Anyone interested in telling a story will be encouraged to complete the storyteller sign up sheet throughout the evening. Of those signed up, names are drawn at random. Selected individuals are given 10 minutes to tell their adventure story.
Storytellers are judged by select audience members using criteria described in detail on the Boldly Went website. A winner is announced at the end of the evening. Stories are recorded and may be shared later in the weekly podcast.
Everyone is welcome to attend and no one will be required or pressured to tell a story.
See the Boldly Went website for more details about what to expect at the event and tips for preparing your 10 minute story if you think you have one to share.

Are you a thrill seeker with a heart for your community?
Face your fears. So our community’s most vulnerable don’t have to.
It’s scary for those who wake up in the morning not knowing where they will sleep that night, if they will eat that day, if they will be assaulted or abused that day.
On Saturday, September 7, 2019, OVER THE EDGE participants will help alleviate some of that daily fear faced by so many… by rappelling off the roof of the Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend.
You’re invited to rappel, volunteer, or sponsor the event!
Edgers – those who rappel – are invited to raise funds to support our community in exchange for the exhilarating experience of rappelling off the tallest building in Central Oregon. The Oxford Hotel stands at 7 stories and 70 feet and will offer quite a thrill to Edgers.
Participants need not be brave or young or non-disabled to go OVER THE EDGE. However, there are a limited number of spots, so interested folks should sign up today, as registration is now open. Once registered, Edgers set up a personal fundraising page, reach their fundraising goal, and secure their spot to rappel off the Oxford Hotel on September 7th.
In addition to the rappel, United Way will be hosting a ground party – closing NW Minnesota Ave and NW Lava Rd to traffic in order to host food vendors, a Sunriver Brewing Company beer garden, activities, DJs, and more.
For those who are not ready to rappel, United Way gives other opportunities to partner with one of Bend’s most reputable and longest-standing nonprofit organizations. The local nonprofit is seeking business sponsors for the event, as well as volunteers.
To sign up or for more information, visit www.deschutesunitedway.org/overtheedge or call 541-389-6507.

Ingrid Rohrer-Downer infuses Broken Top Bottle Shop’s menu with ethnic inspiration.
written by Lee Lewis Husk
Since 2015, the small kitchen at Broken Top Bottle Shop has been in the hands of Ingrid Rohrer-Downer, a chef with an outsized reputation for versatility and creativity. With extensive experience cooking for large parties as well as diners at upscale restaurants, Rohrer-Downer’s ethnically influenced comfort food complements BTBS’s extensive global beer selection.
“Broken Top is a nice place to step back and prepare ethnic food that translates well,” she said.
That love of ethnic food started when she was a youngster in Fresno where a live-in nanny from Argentina fostered in her an appreciation of seafood. After completing the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco in the early 1990s, Rohrer-Downer spent ten years with Bon Appétit Management Co., which offers on-site food service to businesses, universities and others. She started with the company in Palo Alto and later transferred to Hillsboro where the company contracted with Intel.
At Intel, Rohrer-Downer oversaw Mexican, Indian, Sri Lankan, Thai, Japanese and Colombian chefs who catered to the cravings of Intel’s diverse workforce. “I sucked up as much (culinary) knowledge as possible,” she said of the time spent with chefs, who shared recipes and cooking techniques.
Traditional favorites still populate the BTBS menu—house-smoked baby back ribs, the cheese-stuffed DD Ranch burger and the sesame sushi salad. However, global influences are evident around every corner. For example, the pork belly sandwich is now “the pork belly bahn mi sandwich” with Vietnamese flavor infusing each bite. The cauliflower shawarma sandwich is a burst of exotic flavors.
“I can do high-end food, but people love comfort food,” she said. “The difference is I throw in a twist—some unusual stuff in it,” she said.
With a commitment to organic and locally-grown produce and meats, Rohrer-Downer converts the weekly CSA (community supported agriculture) box into “Thursday’s tacos.”
Located at the foot of Central Oregon Community College on Bend’s westside, BTBS’s ground-level space is beneath apartments, which for safety reasons prevent it from having an open flame, hood or deep fat fryer. All the cooking is done on flat-top induction burners, ovens and outdoor Traeger barbeques. That’s where Rohrer-Downer’s creativity shines through.
“It’s a testament to Ingrid’s skills and ability to put out large quantities of food on busy nights from such a small space,” said Jennifer Powell, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Jason.
“She excels under pressure and succeeds by all measures,” said Jennifer.
A compulsive cook, Rohrer-Downer, 45, says she’s always thinking about food and creative ways of preparing it. “I have a lot of food dreams,” she said, adding that at BTBS she’s able to experiment and enjoys interacting with its regular clientele.
The BTBS menu has always offered vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free soups, salads, sandwiches and entrées along with meaty selections. Rohrer-Downer has been tweaking the menu to reflect her love of various cuisines of the world. The results are evident in every bite. Explore their menu here: btbsbend.com
There’s a beer festival for every season (and possibly every month) in Central Oregon. Winter is no exception, and I’m happy to see that the Central Oregon Winter Beer Fest will be back for a third year. Held on the second Saturday of December at GoodLife Biergarten, this fundraiser for the Central Oregon Brewer’s Guild is a great way to support advocacy for our local breweries while enjoying samples of their best winter offerings.
This ‘fest operates pretty much the same as similar events – admission gets you a festival glass and some tickets that can be redeemed for samples of the beers on tap at the event. You can buy more tickets if needed. Many of the beers are on the heavy side, so I don’t usually need more than what’s included with admission.
Last year saw a nice variety of winter-themed ales, porters, stouts and Belgian beers. In addition, the action was moved into a warmed tent, which was a big improvement over being outside in the bitter cold during the inaugural event back in 2013. One drawback was the tent was fairly crowded and loud, but there was still plenty of room to move around and ample space outside around a fire pit. Food trucks will be on-site.
The Central Oregon Winter Beer Fest is on my “must do” list for December, as I enjoyed the last two years and the event is very well-run by the folks at GoodLife. While it was busy, I wouldn’t say the festival was overly crowded. The atmosphere was friendly and warm, and it was a fun opportunity to meet up with friends during the “slump” between Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you’ve never been, I recommend checking it out.
If You Go:
3rd Annual Central Oregon Winter Beer Festival
When: Saturday, December 12th, 2015 1 p.m.-9 p.m.
Where: GoodLife Biergarten (70 SW Century Drive, Bend, OR 97702)
Cost: $10 admission gets you a festival tasting glass + four drink tickets. Extra tickets are $1 each.
Why: There were 22 breweries from Central Oregon and beyond represented at the 2014 event. Also, it’s a fundraiser for the Central Oregon Brewers Guild.
I tend to know what I like in a beer. Something not too hoppy that isn’t balanced out with a strong malt profile. In other words (GASP!) not IPA. Other than that, I’m up for just about anything. Porters and stouts are pretty much always a good bet, but I also like ales, sours, and Belgians.
When I go out for a beer, this makes for some tough decisions when I look at the taps. Lucky for me, most taphouses and pubs offer sampler trays or flights. This means that I can try a little of this and a little of that – a variety of 2 ounce pours that differ in style (or not) and might even come from different breweries. If I’ve never been to a brewery before, it’s a great way to try several of their mainstay beers without breaking the bank (or my liver).
The Pour House Grill is one of my favorite places to order a sampler tray. They offer a wide variety of beers from Central Oregon and beyond – and they have GREAT food. If I’m heading to a brewery for a sampler tray, I like the variety of offerings at Deschutes and CRUX. Both of those places always have to seem enough new beers rotating through that I can find six or so new beers to try.
This time of year, the best sampler is a flight. At the Deschutes Brewery tasting room (not the pub), you can sample the three most recent years of their Black Butte Porter anniversary beer (XXV, XXVI, XXVII). The recipe for the beer stays pretty consistent, but the flavors change a little each year. The flight is a great opportunity to try all three at once, side by side… for FREE. You can visit the tasting room as part of their brewery tour, or just head in to sample the beer.
The changing season also means that The Little Woody Festival is just around the corner. The event hosts breweries from Central Oregon and outside the region, featuring beers aged in barrels (think wine, whiskey or rum). It’s a sample fan’s wonderland and if you are there you’ll find me meandering from tent to tent, in search of my new favorite “tiny beer”.
